Intensity and Pressure of Sound Waves

Si consideri un'onda sonora che si propaga nella direzione x e lo spostamento delle particelle indicato dalla funzione d'onda y. Ricorda l'espressione per un'onda di pressione.
La velocità delle particelle è data dalla derivata temporale dello spostamento, che si ottiene.
Ricordate l'espressione per la potenza come prodotto di forza e velocità. La potenza per unità di area è data dal prodotto della forza per unità di area, che è la pressione, e della velocità. L'intensità è la media temporale di questa quantità.

L'intensità delle onde sonore può essere correlata alle ampiezze dello spostamento e della pressione utilizzando le loro espressioni ondulatorie e la definizione di intensità. Il passo critico per ottenere ciò è scrivere la potenza fornita dalle particelle sull'onda come il prodotto di forza e velocità e semplificare la forza per unità di area come la pressione. La velocità delle particelle del mezzo può essere derivata dallo spostamento.

A differenza della media temporale di un termine sinusoidale, che è zero poiché è positivo e negativo per la stessa quantità di tempo ogni ciclo, la media temporale del quadrato di un termine sinusoidale è 1/2.

Sound intensity can be linked to displacement and pressure in a wave. The key idea is to use the wave expressions and the definition of intensity. To do that, the power carried by the particles is written as force times velocity, and the force per unit area is treated as pressure.

The particle velocity can be found from the displacement of the medium. A sinusoidal term averages to zero over time because it is positive and negative for equal parts of each cycle. Its square does not average to zero. The time average of the square of a sinusoidal term is 1/2.

The intensity expression written in terms of displacement amplitude also depends on frequency. That helps explain why a high-frequency wave can produce the same intensity even with a small vibration amplitude as a low-frequency wave. The pressure-amplitude form is different. It does not depend on frequency, so it is easier to use when discussing how intensity relates to the properties of the medium.
