Work Done by Many Forces

Si consideri un trattore per bagagli che traina un carrello per bagagli con una forza di 10.000 N con un angolo di 30 gradi. Se il carrello offre un attrito di 2.000 N durante il traino, qual è il lavoro svolto sul carrello per spostarlo di 10 m in linea retta?
Viene disegnato un diagramma di corpo libero per ottenere una chiara comprensione delle forze.
Le forze perpendicolari al movimento del carrello non causano lo spostamento del carrello, quindi non viene svolto alcun lavoro da tali forze. 
Le forze nella direzione x sono la componente della forza di trazione e della forza di attrito, che vengono sommate vettorialmente.
Il lavoro totale svolto è la forza risultante lungo lo spostamento moltiplicato per lo spostamento.
In alternativa, il lavoro svolto da ciascuna forza può essere prima calcolato e poi sommato.
Il lavoro svolto dalle forze perpendicolari è nullo. La forza di trazione e la forza di attrito non sono perpendicolari allo spostamento e quindi contribuiscono al lavoro totale.

Il lavoro totale svolto su un oggetto soggetto a molte forze può essere calcolato utilizzando due metodi che danno lo stesso risultato. In un metodo, prima viene calcolato il lavoro svolto da ciascuna forza. Successivamente, quei valori vengono sommati algebricamente per calcolare il lavoro totale svolto da tutte le forze. Nel secondo metodo, prima viene calcolata la forza netta mediante la somma vettoriale di tutte le forze. Poi, viene ottenuto il lavoro svolto da questa forza.

Poiché le forze perpendicolari allo spostamento non compiono lavoro, non contribuiscono al lavoro svolto sull'oggetto. Possono quindi essere semplicemente ignorate nel calcolo nel primo metodo. Tuttavia, nel secondo metodo, devono essere considerate prima nel calcolare il vettore forza netta e solo allora si vede che il loro contributo è nullo.

Se forze mutuamente opposte agiscono sul centro di massa dell'oggetto, contribuiscono a lavoro positivo e negativo diverso nel primo metodo.
