L'amplificatore invertente collega la tensione di ingresso attraverso un resistore al terminale invertente, mette a terra il terminale non invertente e dispone di un resistore di retroazione tra i terminali invertente e di uscita.
Applicando KCL e assumendo che l'amplificatore operazionale sia ideale, viene determinata l'espressione del guadagno.
Gli amplificatori invertenti invertono la polarità del segnale di ingresso mentre lo amplificano, rendendoli utili per la cancellazione del rumore.
Il microfono seleziona il segnale di rumore in ingresso e inverte il segnale nel circuito di cancellazione per eliminare il rumore.
Gli amplificatori operazionali invertenti trovano applicazione nell'elaborazione audio per l'amplificazione, la conversione e il filtraggio del segnale.
Gli amplificatori non invertenti hanno la tensione di ingresso applicata direttamente al terminale non invertente, un resistore tra la massa e il terminale invertente e un resistore per il feedback negativo.

Se il resistore di retroazione è in cortocircuito o se il resistore di ingresso è a circuito aperto, il guadagno diventa unità, creando un inseguitore di tensione.
Convertono gli ingressi ad alta impedenza in uscite a bassa impedenza, consentendo un trasferimento efficiente del segnale a carichi a bassa impedenza.

In un amplificatore invertente, la tensione di ingresso è collegata tramite un resistore al terminale invertente. Nel frattempo, il terminale non invertente viene messo a terra e viene stabilito un resistore di retroazione tra il terminale invertente e quello di uscita, come illustrato nella Figure 1.

L'obiettivo è discernere la relazione tra la tensione di ingresso (vi) e la tensione di uscita (vo). Applicando la legge della corrente di Kirchhoff (KCL) e presupponendo che l'amplificatore operazionale sia ideale, si ottiene l'espressione del guadagno. Un amplificatore invertente ha la capacità di invertire la polarità del segnale di ingresso amplificandolo contemporaneamente. Vale la pena notare che il guadagno dipende esclusivamente dagli elementi esterni collegati all'amplificatore operazionale, essendo il guadagno la resistenza di feedback divisa per la resistenza di ingresso.

Un'altra applicazione critica dell'amplificatore operazionale è quella dell'amplificatore non invertente, come illustrato nella Figure 2.

Qui, la tensione di ingresso (vi) viene applicata direttamente al terminale di ingresso non invertente, mentre il resistore R è collegato tra la terra e il terminale invertente. L'attenzione qui è sulla tensione di uscita e sul guadagno di tensione. Applicando KCL al terminale invertente e sostituendo i valori di tensione si ottiene un'espressione per il guadagno di tensione. Se il resistore di retroazione viene cortocircuitato o se il resistore di ingresso viene aperto, il guadagno si trasforma in unità, formando un inseguitore di tensione o un amplificatore a guadagno unitario. Operational amplifiers can be used as inverting, noninverting, and buffer amplifiers. In these circuits, the output voltage depends on the input voltage and the resistor setup around the op-amp.

In an inverting amplifier, the input voltage is sent through a resistor to the inverting terminal. The non-inverting terminal is grounded, and a feedback resistor links the inverting terminal to the output. Using Kirchhoff's Current Law and an ideal op-amp model, the gain can be found. This circuit reverses the polarity of the input signal while also amplifying it. The gain depends on the external resistors, and it is the feedback resistance divided by the input resistance.

A noninverting amplifier works differently. The input voltage is applied directly to the non-inverting terminal. A resistor is placed between the ground and the inverting terminal, and the feedback path helps determine the output voltage and voltage gain. Applying Kirchhoff's Current Law at the inverting terminal gives the gain expression.

If the feedback resistor is short-circuited or the input resistor is open-circuited, the gain becomes unity. This creates a voltage follower, also called a unity gain amplifier. Because it has high input impedance, this type of circuit is useful as a buffer that separates one circuit from another.
