Il fattore di potenza è il rapporto tra la potenza attiva e la potenza apparente.
È determinato dalla differenza di fase tra la tensione e la corrente, che si verifica a causa della presenza di elementi reattivi nel circuito.
Un'analogia può essere tracciata con un bicchiere di caffè, dove il caffè simboleggia la potenza attiva utile e la schiuma rappresenta la potenza reattiva, che, pur non svolgendo un vero e proprio lavoro, viene utilizzata in alcuni elettrodomestici.
Il costo copre l'intero bicchiere. Per ottenere il valore massimo, la potenza reattiva deve essere ridotta per avvicinare il fattore di potenza all'unità.
Per un carico puramente resistivo, la tensione e la corrente in fase producono un fattore di potenza unitario, dove la potenza apparente è uguale alla potenza attiva.
Per un carico puramente reattivo, il fattore di potenza è zero, il che implica che la potenza attiva è zero.
Tra questi estremi, il fattore di potenza è in vantaggio o in ritardo. Un fattore di potenza principale indica che la corrente guida la tensione, il che implica un carico capacitivo.
Un fattore di potenza ritardato significa che la corrente è in ritardo rispetto alla tensione, indicando un carico induttivo.

Il termine tra parentesi, (θ_v - θ_i), è indicato come angolo del fattore di potenza, poiché rappresenta l'angolo il cui coseno produce il fattore di potenza. Se V rappresenta la tensione attraverso il carico e Ⅰ indica la corrente che lo attraversa, l'angolo del fattore di potenza equivale all'angolo dell'impedenza di carico. Essenzialmente, il fattore di potenza è il coseno della differenza di fase tra tensione e corrente, nonché il coseno dell'angolo dell'impedenza di carico.

Dall'equazione di cui sopra, si può dedurre che il fattore di potenza è il moltiplicatore della potenza apparente per produrre la potenza reale o media. Il valore del fattore di potenza è compreso tra zero e uno. Quando si ha a che fare con un carico puramente resistivo, la tensione e la corrente sono in fase, risultando in un angolo del fattore di potenza (θ_v - θ_i) = 0 e un fattore di potenza = 1. Ciò indica che la potenza apparente è uguale alla potenza media. Per un carico puramente reattivo, si ha (θ_v - θ_i) = ±90o e un fattore di potenza = 0, rendendo la potenza pari a zero. Tra questi due estremi si dice che il fattore di potenza è in anticipo o in ritardo. Un fattore di potenza anticipato suggerisce che la corrente precede la tensione, indicando un carico capacitivo, mentre un fattore di potenza ritardato suggerisce che la corrente segue la tensione, indicando un carico induttivo. Il fattore di potenza ha un impatto significativo sulle bollette elettriche che i consumatori pagano alle loro società di servizi pubblici.

Power Factor

Power factor describes how voltage and current behave in an AC load. It is the ratio of average, or active, power to apparent power. The power factor angle is the phase difference between voltage and current, and the cosine of that angle gives the power factor. It also matches the angle of the load impedance.

Power factor shows how much apparent power becomes real, or average, power. Its value ranges from zero to one. When a load is purely resistive, voltage and current are in phase. In that case, the power factor angle is 0 and the power factor is 1, so apparent power equals average power.

A purely reactive load gives the opposite extreme. The phase difference is ±90°, and the power factor is 0, so the power is zero. Between these limits, the power factor can be leading or lagging. A leading power factor means current leads voltage, which points to a capacitive load. A lagging power factor means current follows voltage, which points to an inductive load.

Power factor also matters in everyday electricity use. It affects the electricity bills customers pay to utility companies. Understanding it helps explain why the phase relationship between voltage and current is important in AC circuits.
