Si consideri un circuito Y-Y bilanciato a tre fili rappresentato nel dominio del tempo, che può essere trasformato in un circuito equivalente per fase.
Innanzitutto, viene determinata la corrente di linea, seguita dalla tensione di fase al carico.
Quindi, la potenza erogata dalla sorgente viene determinata utilizzando i valori efficaci della tensione di fase sinusoidale e della corrente di linea.
Successivamente, la potenza erogata al carico viene calcolata utilizzando la corrente di linea e la resistenza del carico.
La potenza persa nella linea si ottiene utilizzando la corrente di linea e la resistenza di linea.
Quindi, vengono determinati la potenza totale erogata dalla sorgente trifase, la potenza totale ricevuta dal carico trifase e la potenza totale persa nelle linee.
Un'alta percentuale di potenza viene persa nella linea, che può essere ridotta riducendo al minimo la corrente di linea.

La perdita di linea per ciascun filo viene calcolata prendendo il quadrato dell'intensità della corrente di linea e moltiplicandolo per la resistenza della linea.

Per i sistemi trifase equilibrati questo calcolo viene moltiplicato per tre (uno per ogni fase) per ottenere la potenza dissipata totale. La resistenza della linea è direttamente proporzionale alla resistività del materiale e alla lunghezza della linea e inversamente proporzionale alla sezione trasversale del conduttore. Ciò significa che la perdita di linea è direttamente proporzionale alla lunghezza del conduttore e inversamente proporzionale alla sezione trasversale del conduttore. Le società elettriche utilizzano conduttori con aree di sezione trasversale più ampie per ridurre al minimo le perdite di linea e trasmettere potenza a tensioni più elevate, il che consente una corrente inferiore per la stessa quantità di potenza. Three-phase power lines can lose energy as electricity travels from the source to the load. This line loss affects how efficiently power reaches the load. In balanced three-phase circuits, the symmetry makes the analysis easier because one phase can represent the whole system.

The source-load connection can use wye, also called star, or delta configurations. These setups change the relationship between line voltage, phase voltage, line current, and phase current. A per-phase equivalent circuit helps calculate the power delivered to the load and the power lost in the lines.

For each phase of the load, the delivered power depends on the square of the phase current and the phase load resistance. The power lost in one wire is found from the square of the line current multiplied by the resistance of that line. For a balanced three-phase system, the total line loss is three times the loss in one phase.

Line resistance depends on the material resistivity, the length of the conductor, and its cross-sectional area. As the line gets longer, resistance and line loss increase. A larger cross-sectional area lowers resistance and helps reduce loss. Power companies use larger conductors and higher transmission voltages to keep current lower for the same power level, which reduces line loss.
