La Terra è spesso usata come sistema di riferimento e spesso descriviamo la posizione di un oggetto in relazione agli oggetti stazionari sulla Terra. Per esempio, il lancio di un razzo può essere descritto in termini di posizione del raggio rispetto alla terra nel suo complesso. D'altro canto, la posizione di un ciclista potrebbe essere descritta in termini di dov'è rispetto agli edifici vicini. In altri casi, usiamo i sistemi di riferimento che non sono stazionari ma che sono in movimento rispetto alla terra. Per descrivere la posizione di una persona in un aereo, per esempio, usiamo l'aeroplano e non la Terra come riferimento. Per descrivere la posizione di un oggetto che subisce un moto unidimensionale, spesso usiamo la variabile x.

Se un oggetto si muove rispetto ad un sistema di riferimento, la posizione dell'oggetto cambia. Per esempio, se un professore si sposta a destra rispetto alla lavagna, la sua posizione è cambiata. Questo cambiamento di posizione è chiamato spostamento. La parola spostamento implica che un oggetto si è mosso o è stato spostato. Anche se la posizione è il valore numerico di x lungo una linea retta dove un oggetto potrebbe essere posizionato, lo spostamento fornisce il cambiamento di posizione lungo questa linea. Siccome lo spostamento indica la direzione, è una grandezza vettoriale e può essere positivo o negativo, a seconda di quale direzione è scelta come positiva.

In più, un'analisi del movimento può incorporare molti spostamenti. Per esempio, se la destra è positiva e un oggetto si muove 2 m a destra, e poi 4 m a sinistra, lo spostamento dell'individuo è rispettivamente di 2 m – 4 m. Lo spostamento è indicato da Δx, che è il cambiamento di posizione. Risolviamo sempre lo spostamento sottraendo la posizione iniziale da quella finale.
