La tensione è descritta come la forza associata a una corda, una corda o un cavo tirati strettamente. È una forza di trazione, in quanto può tirare solo un oggetto e non può spingerne uno.
Quando una fune viene tesa, la forza di tensione viene trasferita attraverso la fune all'oggetto attaccato. Qui, la forza di tensione bilancia il peso dell'oggetto.
Si consideri una scatola di massa 'm' che viene tirata da una corda ad un angolo theta su una superficie liscia con accelerazione 'a'.
In questa situazione, le forze sulla scatola sono l'attrazione gravitazionale che agisce verso il basso, la forza normale che agisce verso l'alto e la forza di tensione lungo la corda tirata.
La componente x della tensione è l'unica forza che agisce in direzione orizzontale.
In direzione verticale, la componente y della tensione agisce verso l'alto insieme alla forza normale e l'attrazione gravitazionale agisce verso il basso.
Applicando la seconda legge di Newton al sistema si ottiene la forza di tensione esercitata dalla corda e la forza normale esercitata dalla superficie sulla scatola.
