La rivoluzione della luna attorno alla Terra indica la presenza di una forza che la attrae verso il centro dell'orbita.
Issac Newton propose che questa forza attrattiva sia la stessa di quella che tira una mela verso il suolo.
Era un'idea rivoluzionaria, poiché si credeva che gli oggetti celesti e gli oggetti sulla Terra seguissero regole diverse.
La luna impiega 27,3 giorni per orbitare intorno alla Terra. Considerando la distanza media dalla luna, la sua accelerazione può essere stimata. 
Il rapporto tra l'accelerazione lunare e l'accelerazione di un oggetto che cade sulla Terra indica che l'accelerazione è inversamente proporzionale al quadrato della distanza.
Poiché la forza è la massa moltiplicata per l'accelerazione, la forza gravitazionale è direttamente proporzionale alla massa e inversamente proporzionale al quadrato della distanza.
Osservando che l'accelerazione dei pianeti diminuisce inversamente con la loro distanza dal Sole, Newton predisse che la forza gravitazionale agisce tra il Sole, i pianeti e le loro lune.
Estendendo questo argomento a tutti gli oggetti dell'universo, Newton formulò la legge di gravitazione universale.

Negli anni precedenti a Newton, prevaleva una convinzione generale che leggi diverse governassero gli oggetti nel cielo rispetto agli oggetti sulla Terra. Quando Kepler scrisse le tre leggi del moto planetario, spiegando in dettaglio le proprietà geometriche delle orbite planetarie intorno al Sole, non c'era un'immediata idea di discernere la loro connessione con leggi più fondamentali. Fu Isaac Newton che, nel 1665-66, capì la connessione tra il moto planetario, il moto della luna intorno alla Terra e il fenomeno quotidiano degli oggetti che cadono sulla superficie terrestre. Questo fenomeno universale è oggi conosciuto come gravitazione.

Anche se oggi sembra comune, l'affermazione che lo stesso fenomeno governa il moto degli oggetti sulla Terra e il moto della luna intorno alla Terra fu rivoluzionaria ai tempi di Newton. Scoprì che l'accelerazione del moto centripeto della luna intorno alla Terra e l'accelerazione dovuta alla gravità hanno un rapporto inversamente proporzionale al quadrato della distanza rispettiva dell'oggetto dalla Terra. Poiché l'accelerazione è indipendente dalla massa, secondo le sue leggi del moto, la forza deve essere proporzionale alla massa. Questa intuizione lo portò a formulare la legge di gravitazione che porta il suo nome.

Un'altra informazione necessaria per completare la legge di gravitazione di Newton era la costante gravitazionale, che fu derivata sperimentalmente. Il primo esperimento riuscito per misurare la costante fu condotto da Henry Cavendish. Una volta noto il valore di questa costante, insieme alle leggi del moto di Newton, le leggi del moto planetario di Kepler potrebbero essere derivate.
