Il moto di una particella in un percorso curvilineo può essere descritto utilizzando le componenti normale e tangenziale.
Il componente normale è diretto lungo il percorso normale (o radiale) verso la curva in un punto particolare. Rappresenta la variazione della traiettoria del vettore velocità.
La componente tangenziale è tangenziale alla curva in un punto specifico e caratterizza la velocità con cui la velocità cambia lungo il percorso.
L'equazione del moto di una particella in un moto curvilineo può essere espressa utilizzando la seconda legge del moto di Newton lungo le componenti normali e tangenziali.
Qui, l'accelerazione tangenziale positiva rappresenta un aumento dell'entità della velocità e l'accelerazione tangenziale negativa rappresenta una diminuzione dell'entità della velocità della particella.
D'altra parte, la componente normale dell'accelerazione è sempre lungo il raggio del percorso curvo ed è positiva quando è diretta verso il centro della curvatura. La componente normale della forza è anche definita forza centripeta.

Curved motion is described by splitting a particle’s acceleration into tangential and normal parts. These two components help show how the particle moves along a curving path at a specific point.

The tangential component lies along the curve. It shows how the speed changes with time. A positive tangential acceleration means the speed is increasing. A negative tangential acceleration means the speed is decreasing.

The normal component points along the radial direction of the curve. It describes the change in the direction of the velocity vector. This component always follows the radius of the curved path. When it points toward the center of curvature, it is taken as positive.

Newton’s second law is used to write the equation of motion for this kind of motion. The normal force component is called centripetal force. Together, the normal and tangential components give a clear picture of particle motion along a curvilinear path.
