Stress-Strain Diagram

Si consideri un provino cilindrico inserito in un sistema per misurarne la resistenza alla trazione.
Due segni di calibro sono incisi sulla parte centrale del campione. La lunghezza tra i segni è nota come lunghezza del calibro.
Quindi, viene applicato un carico di trazione su entrambe le estremità del provino.
All'aumentare del carico, la lunghezza del calibro aumenta e l'allungamento viene registrato per ogni valore di carico.
Anche la variazione del diametro del provino viene registrata simultaneamente.
La sollecitazione viene calcolata dividendo il carico per l'area della sezione trasversale originale del provino. La deformazione viene calcolata dividendo l'allungamento per la lunghezza di riferimento originale.
Un diagramma sforzo-deformazione si ottiene quindi tracciando la deformazione come un'ascissa e la sollecitazione come un'ordinata.
Si osserva che lo stress varia linearmente con lo stress durante il carico iniziale. Tuttavia, all'aumentare del carico, piccole variazioni della sollecitazione portano a variazioni significative dei valori di deformazione per la maggior parte dei materiali.
A seconda della temperatura e della velocità di caricamento, i risultati variano per alcuni materiali.

Un diagramma sforzo-deformazione è uno strumento cruciale che mostra graficamente le caratteristiche meccaniche di un materiale. Questo diagramma è ricavato da una prova di trazione eseguita su un campione cilindrico preparato con cura. Il campione ha due segni di riferimento incisi sulla sua parte centrale e la distanza tra questi segni è nota come lunghezza del calibro. Il provino cilindrico viene posizionato in una macchina di prova, che applica un carico centrico crescente. All'aumentare di questo carico, aumenta anche la lunghezza del calibro. Questa variazione di lunghezza, o allungamento, viene registrata per ciascun valore del carico utilizzando un comparatore. In molti casi, viene utilizzato contemporaneamente un secondo comparatore per misurare le variazioni del diametro del campione.

La sollecitazione viene quindi calcolata dividendo il carico per l'area della sezione trasversale originale del campione. Nel frattempo, la deformazione viene determinata dividendo l'allungamento per la lunghezza iniziale del misuratore. Questi valori calcolati vengono quindi tracciati su un grafico, con la deformazione rappresentata sull'ascissa e la sollecitazione sull'ordinata, creando il diagramma sforzo-deformazione. Da precisare che i diagrammi sforzo-deformazione possono variare in modo significativo tra materiali diversi. Anche all'interno dello stesso materiale, i risultati possono variare a causa di una serie di fattori, come la temperatura del provino al momento del test e la velocità alla quale viene applicato il carico.

A stress-strain diagram shows how a material responds during a tensile test. It records the mechanical behavior of a cylindrical specimen as it is pulled by an increasing centric load. The specimen is carefully prepared before testing.

Two gauge marks are inscribed on the central part of the specimen. The distance between these marks is the gauge length. As the load increases, the gauge length also increases. This change in length is called elongation.

The elongation is measured for each load value with a dial gauge. In many cases, a second dial gauge is used at the same time to measure changes in the specimen diameter. Stress is calculated by dividing the load by the original cross-sectional area. Strain is calculated by dividing the elongation by the initial gauge length.

These values are then plotted on a graph. Strain is placed on the horizontal axis, or abscissa, and stress is placed on the vertical axis, or ordinate. The result is the stress-strain diagram. It can differ a lot from one material to another.

Even results from the same material can change under different test conditions. Temperature during testing can affect the outcome. The speed at which the load is applied can also change the diagram.
