Quando un provino è sottoposto a carico, la lunghezza aumenta prima linearmente a una velocità lenta, risultando in una linea retta iniziale con una forte pendenza sul diagramma sforzo-deformazione.
Al raggiungimento di un valore di sollecitazione critico, il provino subisce una deformazione significativa con un aumento minimo del carico applicato, principalmente a causa delle sollecitazioni di taglio che causano lo slittamento lungo le superfici oblique.
Con l'aumentare del carico, il diametro del materiale si riduce in un punto, chiamato strizione. Dopo lo strizione, anche una piccola quantità di carico allunga ulteriormente il campione fino a rompersi.
Lo snervamento è un processo in cui il materiale inizia a deformarsi plasticamente. La sollecitazione alla quale inizia lo snervamento è definita resistenza allo snervamento, mentre la sollecitazione corrispondente al carico massimo è la resistenza ultima e la sollecitazione alla rottura è la resistenza alla rottura.
Il diagramma sforzo-deformazione dell'acciaio strutturale mostra una sollecitazione costante post-snervamento dovuta all'incrudimento, ma la sollecitazione dell'alluminio aumenta in modo non lineare.
La duttilità del materiale è misurata dall'allungamento percentuale o dalla riduzione percentuale dell'area della sezione trasversale. In condizioni di compressione, le curve sforzo-deformazione dei materiali duttili divergono a deformazioni più elevate, poiché non si verifica alcun strizione.

La relazione sforzo-deformazione nei materiali duttili come l'acciaio strutturale o l'alluminio, è complessa e progredisce attraverso diverse fasi. Quando un provino viene caricato, inizialmente mostra un aumento lineare della lunghezza, rappresentato da una linea retta ripida sul diagramma sforzo-deformazione. Indica che il materiale si sta deformando elasticamente e una volta scaricato ritornerà alla forma originaria. Tuttavia, quando viene raggiunto un valore critico di sollecitazione, inizia la deformazione plastica. Questa fase vede una deformazione sostanziale con un aumento minimo del carico applicato, principalmente a causa delle sollecitazioni di taglio che facilitano lo scivolamento lungo le superfici oblique del materiale. All'aumentare del carico, ad un certo punto si verifica una diminuzione del diametro del materiale, noto come strizione. Dopo la formazione della strizione, anche un incremento minimo del carico allunga significativamente il provino fino alla rottura.

In questo contesto, il carico di snervamento è la deformazione plastica che dà origine allo stress. La resistenza ultima è il carico massimo che il materiale può sopportare prima della formazione di striature, mentre la resistenza alla rottura è lo stress che porta alla rottura. È interessante notare che il diagramma sforzo-deformazione dell'acciaio strutturale, rimane stabile dopo lo snervamento a causa dell'incrudimento, a differenza dell'alluminio, che vede un aumento dello stress non lineare dopo lo snervamento. Infine, la duttilità, che indica una significativa deformazione plastica prima della rottura, viene misurata mediante l'allungamento percentuale o la riduzione dell'area della sezione trasversale. Sotto compressione, le curve sforzo-deformazione dei materiali duttili, divergono a deformazioni elevate poiché non si verifica la strizione.

Ductile materials such as structural steel and aluminium show a multi-stage stress-strain response. When a specimen is loaded, its length first increases linearly at a slow rate. This produces a steep straight line on the stress-strain diagram. That initial part shows elastic deformation, which means the material returns to its original shape after unloading.

When the stress reaches a critical value, plastic deformation begins. In this stage, the material changes shape a lot while the applied load increases only a little. Shearing stresses help this process by allowing slippage along oblique surfaces in the material.

As loading continues, the specimen may start to narrow in diameter. This is called necking. After necking begins, even a small increase in load can stretch the specimen greatly until it finally ruptures.

The diagram also identifies key strength values. Yield strength is the stress that starts plastic deformation. Ultimate strength is the maximum load the material can carry before necking. Breaking strength is the stress at rupture. Structural steel often shows a steady post-yield region because of strain-hardening, while aluminium shows a non-linear stress increase after yield. Ductility is the ability to undergo large plastic deformation before rupture, and it is measured by percent elongation or reduction in cross-sectional area. Under compression, the stress-strain curves of ductile materials differ at high strains because necking does not occur.
