I materiali fragili, sottoposti a sollecitazione di trazione, non si allungano molto prima di rompersi, il che significa che la loro resistenza alla rottura e alla rottura sono identiche. Rispetto ai materiali duttili, possiedono una deformazione inferiore durante la rottura.
Si verifica lungo una superficie perpendicolare al carico, indicando che le sollecitazioni normali causano principalmente il cedimento.
I materiali fragili non subiscono striature evidenti sotto stress.
La maggior parte dei materiali fragili ha una resistenza alla compressione più elevata rispetto alla tensione, principalmente a causa di difetti microscopici come crepe o cavità, che indeboliscono il materiale sotto tensione.
Si consideri un diagramma sforzo-deformazione per la soletta in calcestruzzo, un esempio di materiale fragile.
Sotto tensione, si osserva un intervallo elastico lineare fino al punto di snervamento, quindi la deformazione aumenta più rapidamente della sollecitazione fino alla rottura della soletta.
In compressione, il calcestruzzo mostra un intervallo elastico lineare più ampio e la rottura non si verifica quando la sollecitazione raggiunge il suo picco. Invece, lo stress diminuisce mentre lo sforzo continua ad aumentare fino alla rottura.
Il modulo di elasticità, rappresentato dalla pendenza della regione lineare, è uguale sia in compressione che in tensione per la maggior parte dei materiali fragili.

I materiali fragili, tra cui vetro, ghisa e pietra, presentano caratteristiche uniche. Si fratturano senza variazioni considerevoli nella loro velocità di allungamento, indicando che la loro resistenza alla rottura e il carico massimo sono equivalenti. Tali materiali mostrano anche livelli di deformazione inferiori nel punto di rottura. La rottura nei materiali fragili deriva prevalentemente da sollecitazioni normali, come evidenziato dalla rottura creata lungo una superficie perpendicolare al carico applicato. Questi materiali non presentano strozzature significative. La strizione è la riduzione locale dell'area della sezione trasversale sotto stress. Un aspetto interessante della maggior parte dei materiali fragili è la loro maggiore resistenza alla rottura in compressione rispetto a quella in trazione, principalmente a causa di difetti microscopici come crepe o cavità che possono indebolire il materiale sotto sforzo di trazione ma hanno un impatto minimo sulla sua resistenza a compressione.

Il calcestruzzo, un materiale fragile comune, si comporta diversamente sotto tensione e compressione. Il diagramma sforzo-deformazione sotto tensione rivela un campo elastico lineare fino al punto di snervamento, seguito da un rapido aumento della deformazione fino alla rottura. Al contrario, il calcestruzzo mostra un intervallo elastico lineare più ampio sotto compressione e la rottura non si verifica nemmeno durante i picchi di sollecitazione. Invece, lo stress diminuisce all’aumentare della deformazione fino alla rottura. È importante sottolineare che il modulo di elasticità, indicato nella curva sforzo-deformazione dalla pendenza della sezione lineare, rimane costante sia in tensione che in compressione per la maggior parte dei materiali fragili.

Brittle materials such as glass, cast iron, and stone fail with very little change in elongation. Their breaking strength and ultimate strength are nearly the same, and the strain at rupture is low. In these materials, failure is usually driven by normal stress, so the break surface is typically perpendicular to the applied load.

Brittle materials also show little or no necking. Necking is the local narrowing of a material’s cross section under stress. Another important feature is that many brittle materials are stronger in compression than in tension. Small cracks or cavities can weaken them in tension, but these defects have much less effect when the material is compressed.

Concrete is a common example of a brittle material. Under tension, its stress-strain curve has a linear elastic region up to the yield point, followed by a rapid rise in strain until rupture. Under compression, concrete has a longer linear elastic range, and rupture does not happen at the peak stress. Instead, stress drops as strain keeps increasing until failure.

For most brittle materials, the modulus of elasticity is the same in tension and compression. The modulus of elasticity is the slope of the linear part of the stress-strain curve. This slope shows how stiff the material is in both loading modes.
