La sollecitazione ingegneristica è il rapporto tra il carico e l'area della sezione trasversale originale non deformata. Lo stress ingegneristico approssima la deformazione che rappresenta il materiale sotto carico, che è rilevante per i materiali duttili post-snervamento.
I diagrammi sforzo-deformazione ingegneristico sono spesso utilizzati per comodità, ma un vero diagramma sforzo-deformazione fornisce una rappresentazione più accurata, soprattutto con grandi deformazioni.
La sollecitazione reale viene calcolata dividendo il carico per l'area della sezione trasversale del provino nel particolare istante di deformazione. All'aumentare del carico, l'area della sezione trasversale diminuisce, riflettendo la sollecitazione reale.
Durante la fase di strizione, la sollecitazione reale, che è proporzionale al carico ma inversamente proporzionale all'area, continua ad aumentare fino alla rottura del provino.
La deformazione reale utilizza valori di lunghezza registrati in successione. Ogni incremento della distanza tra i segni di gauge, diviso per la lunghezza corrispondente, dà la deformazione elementare.
La deformazione reale è la somma di tutti i valori di deformazione elementari, che riflette il comportamento del materiale in modo più accurato.
A differenza dei grafici sforzo-deformazione ingegneristici, i diagrammi di sollecitazione reale rispetto alla deformazione reale rimangono coerenti durante il necking e nelle prove di trazione e compressione.

Il concetto di deformazione reale rafforza ulteriormente questa rappresentazione accurata. Considera i successivi valori di lunghezza registrati. Ogni incremento della distanza tra i segni di sagoma viene diviso per la sua lunghezza corrispondente per ottenere la deformazione elementare. La deformazione reale è l'accumulo di questi valori di deformazione elementare, che riflettono precisamente il comportamento del materiale. A differenza dei diagrammi di sollecitazione-deformazione ingegneristici, i diagrammi di sollecitazione reale e deformazione reale mantengono la coerenza durante la fase di strizione e attraverso vari test, come i test di trazione e compressione.

Stress-strain curves beyond yield show how ductile materials behave after they start to deform permanently. Engineering stress is found by dividing the load by the original, undeformed cross-sectional area. It is a useful approximation, but it can lose accuracy when strain becomes large.

True stress gives a more exact picture of the same specimen under load. It is calculated by dividing the applied load by the instantaneous cross-sectional area during deformation. As the specimen stretches, its area decreases, and true stress reflects that change. During necking, true stress continues to rise because it depends on the load and the shrinking area, and it keeps rising until rupture.

True strain adds another layer of accuracy by using successive length measurements. Each small increase between gauge marks is divided by its current length to find an elementary strain. The true strain is the sum of these small strain values, so it tracks material behavior more precisely. Unlike engineering stress-strain diagrams, true stress versus true strain diagrams stay consistent during necking and also work well in tensile and compressive tests.
