La fatica si verifica quando i materiali, sottoposti a carichi ripetuti per migliaia o milioni di cicli, si rompono a un livello di sollecitazione molto inferiore alla resistenza alla rottura del materiale.
Il cedimento per fatica mostra fragilità, anche in materiali normalmente duttili.
L'affaticamento può verificarsi a causa di carichi fluttuanti, come la flessione continua di barre o fili d'acciaio sottili nello stesso punto o le vibrazioni prodotte da giranti della pompa sbilanciate.
Il diagramma delle sollecitazioni rispetto al numero di cicli di carico per l'acciaio indica che le applicazioni ad alta sollecitazione richiedono meno cicli per causare la rottura. Tuttavia, al diminuire della sollecitazione massima, aumenta il numero di cicli necessari per la rottura.
Il livello di sollecitazione diminuisce fino al limite di resistenza al quale non si verifica il cedimento, anche per un numero indefinitamente elevato di cicli di carico.
Per i metalli non ferrosi, come l'alluminio, la sollecitazione a rottura diminuisce con l'aumentare dei cicli di caricamento.
Il cedimento per fatica spesso inizia in presenza di imperfezioni microscopiche, aumentando fino a quando il materiale non cede sotto carico. Le condizioni della superficie influiscono in modo significativo sulla resistenza, con i campioni lavorati che si dimostrano più durevoli.

In genere si verifica una rottura fragile, anche per i materiali duttili. Si tratta di una considerazione critica nella progettazione di macchine e componenti strutturali soggetti a carichi ripetitivi o variabili. La natura di questi carichi può variare da carichi fluttuanti come giranti di pompe sbilanciate che causano vibrazioni, alla flessione ripetuta di un sottile filo di acciaio avanti e indietro nello stesso punto, che può portare a guasti per fatica.

Il numero di cicli di carico necessari per causare la rottura di un provino può essere determinato sperimentalmente per qualsiasi livello massimo di sollecitazione. Genera una curva dello stress rispetto al numero di cicli di carico, fornendo informazioni significative sulle proprietà di fatica del materiale. Ad esempio, la curva dello stress tipico rispetto al numero di cicli di carico per l'acciaio indica che le applicazioni ad alto stress richiedono meno cicli per causare la rottura. Tuttavia, al diminuire dello stress massimo, il numero di cicli necessari per la rottura aumenta fino a raggiungere il limite di resistenza. È fondamentale notare che la rottura per fatica spesso inizia con una fessura o un’imperfezione microscopica, propagandosi fino a quando il materiale non riesce più a sostenere il carico massimo. I campioni lavorati e lucidati tendono ad avere un limite di resistenza più elevato rispetto ai componenti laminati, forgiati o corrosi.

Fatigue failure happens when materials rupture after repeated or fluctuating loads. The stress can be far below the material’s static breaking strength. Even ductile materials can fail in a brittle way under fatigue.

This behavior matters in machines and structural parts that face repetitive or changing loads. One example is an unbalanced pump impeller that creates vibrations. Another is a thin steel rod or wire bent back and forth in the same spot until it breaks.

The number of loading cycles needed for failure can be measured for a chosen maximum stress level. These results are shown on a stress versus number of loading cycles curve. For steel, higher stress usually means fewer cycles to rupture. As the maximum stress drops, the number of cycles needed for rupture rises until the endurance limit is reached.

Fatigue failure often starts at a tiny crack or imperfection. The crack grows until the material can no longer carry the maximum load. Machined and polished specimens usually have a higher endurance limit than rolled, forged, or corroded components.
