La deformazione di un'asta con materiali e sezioni trasversali diversi viene calcolata dividendola in parti, ciascuna caratterizzata da parametri individuali.
Quindi, viene calcolata la deformazione in ciascuna parte e la deformazione totale dell'asta viene calcolata sommando la deformazione in ciascuna parte.
Quando un'estremità dell'asta è fissa, la deformazione è uguale allo spostamento della sua estremità libera. Ma, quando entrambe le estremità dell'asta si muovono, la deformazione è misurata dallo spostamento relativo di un'estremità rispetto all'altra.
Si consideri un assemblaggio di tre barre elastiche collegate da un perno rigido nel punto O. Se viene applicato un carico all'estremità libera della barra 1, ogni barra si deformerà.
Per le barre 2 e 3, fissate ai supporti fissi B e C, la deformazione comune è misurata dallo spostamento del punto O.
Per la barra 1, dove entrambe le estremità si muovono, la deformazione è misurata dalla differenza tra gli spostamenti dei punti O e A.

Quando un'asta è costituita da materiali diversi o presenta sezioni diverse, deve essere divisa in parti che soddisfino le condizioni necessarie per determinare la deformazione. Ciascuna di queste parti è caratterizzata da una propria: forza interna, area della sezione trasversale, lunghezza e modulo di elasticità. Questi parametri vengono poi utilizzati per calcolare la deformazione dell'intera asta.

Nel caso di un'asta a sezione variabile la deformazione non è costante ma dipende dalla posizione. Si esprime la deformazione di un elemento di lunghezza e la deformazione totale dell'asta si calcola integrando questa espressione su tutta la lunghezza dell'asta.

Negli scenari in cui un'estremità dell'asta è fissa, la deformazione è uguale allo spostamento della sua estremità libera. Tuttavia, quando entrambe le estremità di un'asta si muovono, la deformazione viene misurata dallo spostamento relativo di un'estremità rispetto all'altra. Consideriamo un sistema di tre barre elastiche collegate da un perno rigido. Se viene applicato un carico in un punto, ciascuna barra si deformerà. Per le barre fissate a supporti fissi, la deformazione comune è misurata dallo spostamento di un punto specifico. Calculating rod stretch from mixed loads starts with breaking the rod into parts. This step is needed when the rod is made of different materials or has changes in cross-section. Each part has its own internal force, cross-sectional area, length, and modulus of elasticity.

These values are used to find the deformation of the full rod. For a member with a variable cross-section, the strain is not constant. Instead, it changes with position along the rod. The deformation of a small element is written first, and the total deformation is found by integrating that expression over the full length.

The meaning of deformation also depends on how the rod is supported. If one end is fixed, the deformation is the displacement of the free end. If both ends move, the deformation is measured as the relative displacement of one end compared with the other.

This idea also applies to a system of three elastic bars connected by a rigid pin. When a load is applied at one point, each bar deforms. For the bars attached to fixed supports, the common deformation is measured by the displacement of a chosen point. For the bar with moving ends, deformation is the difference between the displacements of the two points.
