Quando una barra sottile è soggetta a un carico assiale, il materiale della barra subisce una deformazione assiale, causandone la deformazione in direzione assiale.
Contemporaneamente, il materiale subisce anche una deformazione laterale, deformandosi in direzioni perpendicolari al carico assiale.
Si presume che il materiale sia omogeneo e isotropo, rendendo le sue proprietà meccaniche indipendenti dalla posizione e dalla direzione. Quindi, la deformazione in qualsiasi direzione trasversale deve avere lo stesso valore.
Il coefficiente di Poisson è una costante fondamentale definita come il rapporto negativo tra la deformazione laterale e la deformazione assiale indotta dal carico applicato per un dato materiale.
Il segno negativo utilizzato è quello di ottenere un valore positivo per il rapporto di Poisson poiché le deformazioni assiali e laterali hanno segni opposti.
I materiali con un alto rapporto di Poisson tendono a subire una maggiore contrazione laterale quando sottoposti a carichi assiali, mentre quelli con un rapporto basso tendono ad essere meno colpiti.
Ad esempio, la gomma ha un rapporto di Poisson vicino a 0,5, il che significa che subisce quasi la stessa contrazione laterale dell'allungamento assiale.

Poisson's Ratio

Poisson's ratio describes how a material changes shape when it is pulled or compressed along one direction. It links the strain in the direction of the force to the strain that happens sideways. When a slender bar is loaded axially, it stretches along the load and contracts laterally.

Poisson's ratio is defined as the negative ratio of lateral contraction to axial elongation. The negative sign is used because the two strains usually have opposite signs. This keeps the ratio positive and makes it easier to compare materials.

The value of Poisson's ratio affects how a material behaves under stress. Materials with high Poisson's ratios, such as rubber, can contract sideways almost as much as they elongate lengthwise. Rubber has a Poisson's ratio near 0.5.

Knowing this ratio helps predict how much a material will compress in the lateral direction when an axial load is applied. That prediction is useful in design because it helps structures handle expected stresses and avoid failure. Some anisotropic materials have different Poisson's ratios in different directions, and cork is known to have a zero Poisson ratio in one direction.
