Il modulo di massa misura la resistenza di un materiale alla compressione uniforme. È definita come la costante di proporzionalità tra una variazione di pressione e la variazione di volume relativa risultante.
Si consideri un cubo isotropo di unità di volume. Se sottoposto a normali sollecitazioni, si deforma in un parallelepipedo rettangolare con un nuovo volume.
La differenza tra questo nuovo volume e quello originale è definita dilatazione del materiale. La dilatazione può essere espressa come la somma delle deformazioni in tutte e tre le direzioni.
Nel caso di un corpo sottoposto a pressione idrostatica uniforme, ogni componente di sollecitazione è uguale al negativo della pressione idrostatica.
Sostituendo questi valori nell'equazione di dilatazione si ottiene un'espressione che introduce la costante nota come modulo di massa, espressa nelle stesse unità del modulo di elasticità.
I materiali stabili sotto pressione idrostatica diminuiscono di volume, rendendo la dilatazione negativa e il modulo di massa positivo.
Un materiale ideale con un rapporto di Poisson pari a zero può allungarsi senza contrazione laterale. Al contrario, il rapporto di Poisson di 0,5 significa perfetta incomprimibilità.

Questo modulo ha le stesse unità del modulo di elasticità. Sotto pressione idrostatica, i materiali stabili si riducono di volume, rendendo la dilatazione negativa e il modulo di massa positivo. Bulk Modulus

Bulk modulus describes how much a material resists a uniform squeeze. It links a change in pressure to the relative change in volume. For high school students, it is easiest to think of it as a measure of how hard it is to compress a material evenly from all sides.

The idea becomes clearer when an isotropic material element is treated as a cube with unit volume. When normal stresses act on the cube, it deforms into a rectangular parallelepiped and its volume changes. The difference between the new volume and the original volume is called dilatation. Dilatation is found by adding the strains in the three spatial directions.

Under uniform hydrostatic pressure, each stress component is equal to the negative of that pressure. Substituting those stress values into the dilatation formula leads to the expression for bulk modulus. The bulk modulus has the same units as the modulus of elasticity. Stable materials usually lose volume under hydrostatic pressure, so dilatation is negative and the bulk modulus is positive.

The transcript also connects bulk behavior to Poisson's ratio. An ideal material with a Poisson's ratio of zero could stretch in one direction without a lateral contraction. A material with a Poisson's ratio of 0.5 would be perfectly incompressible.
