Considera un piccolo tappo saldato a una grande piastra. Durante la saldatura, la temperatura del tappo aumenta notevolmente, riducendo sia il modulo di elasticità che le sollecitazioni.
Una volta che il tappo si raffredda dopo la saldatura, provoca un aumento del modulo di elasticità e lo snervamento avviene a un livello di sollecitazione abbastanza costante, creando una tensione residua nel tappo e nella saldatura.
Anche il raffreddamento dei metalli fusi o laminati a caldo provoca tensioni residue. In questi casi, gli strati esterni si raffreddano più velocemente del nucleo interno, facendoli riacquistare più rapidamente la loro rigidità.
Al ritorno a temperatura ambiente, il nucleo interno si contrae più degli strati esterni, con conseguenti sollecitazioni di trazione longitudinale residue sul nucleo interno.
Gli strati esterni sviluppano tensioni di compressione residue. Le grandi sollecitazioni residue vengono rimosse attraverso il riscaldamento e il raffreddamento lento.

Le tensioni residue permangono in una struttura anche dopo aver rimosso l'induttore di stress originale. Questo fenomeno spesso deriva da varie deformazioni plastiche nelle diverse parti di una struttura. Consideriamo un'asta allungata oltre il suo punto di snervamento. Non riacquisterà la sua lunghezza originale a causa della deformazione permanente. Anche dopo la rimozione del carico, lo stelo non perde del tutto la tensione a causa delle deformazioni plastiche irregolari, con conseguenti tensioni residue. Il calcolo di queste sollecitazioni nelle strutture è complicato. Fattori come gli sbalzi di temperatura durante la saldatura possono causare deformazioni plastiche, portando ad una riduzione dell'elasticità e alla generazione di tensioni residue.

Ad esempio, un tappo saldato a una piastra si riscalda notevolmente durante il processo, riducendone lo stress. Raffreddandosi dopo la saldatura, la sua elasticità aumenta provocando snervamento a livello di sollecitazione costante. Ciò si traduce in uno stress residuo vicino al carico di snervamento dell'acciaio. Le tensioni residue si verificano anche durante il raffreddamento dei metalli dopo la fusione o la laminazione a caldo. Gli strati esterni si raffreddano più velocemente del nucleo interno, riacquistando rigidità più rapidamente e portando a tensioni residue di trazione nel nucleo e di compressione negli strati esterni. Queste sollecitazioni possono essere significative e talvolta richiedono la rimozione attraverso il riscaldamento del campione e un raffreddamento lento. Comprendere e gestire le tensioni residue è fondamentale nella progettazione ingegneristica e nei processi di produzione, garantendo l'affidabilità e la durabilità di strutture e componenti.

Residual stresses are stresses that remain in a structure after the original load or heat source is removed. They often form when different parts of a material undergo uneven plastic deformation, which means permanent shape change. A rod stretched past its yield point is one example. It will not return to its original length, and some stress stays inside even after the load is gone.

These stresses can also develop during welding. Heat changes the material during the weld and can cause plastic deformation. For example, a plug welded to a plate heats up strongly, which reduces its stress. As it cools, its elasticity increases again. The material then yields at a constant stress level, and the residual stress can end up close to the steel yield strength.

Residual stresses are also common after casting and hot rolling. During cooling, the outer layers of metal cool faster than the inner core. The outer layers regain stiffness sooner, while the core stays hot longer. This can leave tensile residual stresses in the core and compressive residual stresses in the outer layers.

These internal stresses can be large enough to matter in engineering design and manufacturing. In some cases, they are removed by reheating a specimen and cooling it slowly. Understanding residual stresses helps improve the reliability and durability of structures and components.
