La flessione pura si verifica quando un membro prismatico possiede un piano di simmetria e sperimenta coppie di uguale grandezza che agiscono all'interno di quel piano. Questo tipo di flessione avviene senza l'influenza di forze dirette.
Ad esempio, si può osservare una flessione pura nella parte centrale di un bilanciere che viene sollevato da un sollevatore di pesi. Qui, non vengono applicate forze dirette alla parte centrale del bilanciere. Invece, il peso a ciascuna estremità crea momenti uguali e opposti, con conseguente flessione.
Quando una persona sale una scala, i pioli della scala subiscono una pura flessione a causa del momento generato dal peso della persona.
L'analisi di flessione pura viene utilizzata anche per esaminare travi o elementi prismatici soggetti a carichi trasversali. In una trave a sbalzo che sostiene un carico concentrato alla sua estremità libera, la distribuzione delle tensioni normali può essere ottenuta dalla coppia come se la trave fosse in flessione pura.
Può essere utilizzato anche nello studio delle sollecitazioni e delle deformazioni in elementi compositi costituiti da più di un materiale, come le travi in cemento armato.

Applicazioni pratiche della flessione pura sono comunemente osservate negli scenari quotidiani, come il sollevamento pesi con un bilanciere, dove i pesi alle estremità creano flessione nella parte centrale della barra senza che forze dirette agiscano sulla parte centrale della barra. Allo stesso modo, i pioli delle scale subiscono una pura flessione quando una persona sale, poiché il peso dello scalatore genera momenti su ciascun piolo.

Pure bending describes how a beam bends under equal and opposite moments. It is a key idea in structural mechanics. Engineers use it to study how prismatic members, such as beams, deform under symmetrical loads without direct forces on the member.

In pure bending, the beam experiences bending without axial force or shear force. This makes it possible to predict the stress pattern across the cross-section. The bending stress depends on the bending moment, the moment of inertia of the cross-section, and the distance from the neutral axis to the outer edge.

These calculations help show how much a beam will bend under a load. They also help determine whether the beam can withstand the stress without failing. That is why pure bending is important when designing safe structures.

The idea appears in everyday examples. A barbell bends in the middle when weights at the ends create moments, while the middle part has no direct force acting on it. Ladder rungs can also undergo pure bending when a person climbs and their weight creates moments across each rung.
