Si considerino le deformazioni di un elemento prismatico simmetrico sottoposto a coppie uguali e opposte.
Quando l'asta si piega in modo uniforme, le linee sulle facce più larghe delle aste si trasformano in un cerchio di curvatura costante centrato nel punto C.
Dividendo l'asta in minuscoli elementi cubici, diventa evidente che l'unica componente di sollecitazione diversa da zero è quella normale, che porta a una sollecitazione uniassiale in un dato punto.
Quindi, esiste una superficie neutra parallela alle facce superiore e inferiore dell'asta dove le componenti longitudinali di deformazione e sollecitazione sono nulle.
La deformazione di un arco, situato a una distanza y sopra la superficie neutra, può essere espressa come la differenza tra la lunghezza di questo arco e quella della superficie neutra.
Esprimendo queste lunghezze in termini di raggio e angolo sotteso e dividendo la deformazione per la lunghezza dell'arco neutro si vede che la deformazione normale longitudinale varia linearmente con la distanza y dalla superficie neutra.
Ipotizzando una flessione positiva, il segno negativo indica la concavità ascendente della trave.

Analizzando la deformazione di un elemento prismatico simmetrico soggetto a flessione per coppie uguali ed opposte, risulta chiaro che man mano che l'elemento si piega, le linee originariamente rette sulle sue facce più larghe si curvano in archi circolari, con raggio costante centrato in un punto noto come Punto C. Questo fenomeno aiuta a comprendere più chiaramente la distribuzione delle sollecitazioni e delle deformazioni all'interno dell'asta.

Quando l'elemento viene segmentato in piccoli elementi cubici, si osserva che la sollecitazione primaria sperimentata all'interno dell'elemento è una sollecitazione normale, che porta a condizioni di sollecitazione uniassiale in qualsiasi punto. Questa disposizione rivela l'esistenza di una superficie neutra, dove sia la componente longitudinale di deformazione che quella di sollecitazione sono pari a zero. Questa superficie corre parallela alle facce superiore e inferiore dell'elemento e la distanza dalla superficie neutra al punto C è ⍴

Per esplorare la deformazione di questo elemento, consideriamo un arco ad una distanza y dalla superficie neutra. La deformazione è la differenza di lunghezze dal punto C tra l'arco in y (L') e l'arco di superficie neutra (L). Dividendo la deformazione δ = L’ - L per la lunghezza dell’arco neutro si vede che la deformazione normale longitudinale varia linearmente con la distanza dalla superficie neutra. Applicando la legge di Hooke, che mette in relazione lo stress e la deformazione nei materiali elastici, lo stress può essere determinato in qualsiasi punto in base alla sua distanza dalla superficie neutra.

A symmetric prismatic member in bending shows how neutral surfaces, strain, and stress work together. When equal and opposite couples bend the member, the straight lines on its wider faces become circular arcs centered at Point C. That curved shape helps show how deformation changes across the section.

If the member is divided into tiny cubic elements, the main stress inside it is normal stress. This creates uniaxial stress conditions at any point. The bending pattern also reveals a neutral surface, where the longitudinal strain and the longitudinal stress are both zero. This surface stays parallel to the upper and lower faces of the member, and the distance from the neutral surface to Point C is ρ.

To describe the deformation, consider an arc at a distance y from the neutral surface. The deformation is the difference between the arc length at y, L', and the neutral arc length, L. When δ = L' - L is divided by the length of the neutral arc, the longitudinal normal strain is shown to change linearly with distance from the neutral surface. Hooke's Law then links that strain to stress, so the stress at any point can be found from its position relative to the neutral surface.
