Si consideri un momento flettente in cui un elemento simmetrico subisce una sollecitazione entro il limite elastico. La sollecitazione longitudinale può essere espressa utilizzando la legge di Hooke.
Ricordiamo l'espressione per la deformazione longitudinale in termini di deformazione massima a una distanza 'c' dalla superficie neutra.
Moltiplicandolo per il modulo di elasticità e sostituendolo nell'equazione della sollecitazione si nota che la sollecitazione normale varia linearmente con la distanza dalla superficie neutra.
Ora, richiama le espressioni per la somma delle componenti della forza e dei momenti. La sostituzione della sollecitazione nell'equazione della forza indica che entro i limiti elastici, l'asse neutro passa per il baricentro della sezione.
Sostituendo la sollecitazione nell'equazione del momento e semplificandola si ottiene un'espressione contenente un integrale uguale al momento d'inerzia della sezione trasversale rispetto all'asse baricentrico perpendicolare al piano della coppia.
L'ultima espressione semplificata è la formula di flessione elastica per la massima sollecitazione. Per una distanza arbitraria 'y' dalla superficie neutra, questa formula fornisce la sollecitazione di flessione causata dalla flessione dell'asta.

Quando si analizza la flessione in elementi simmetrici, è fondamentale comprendere come si distribuiscono le sollecitazioni quando soggette a momenti flettenti. Questa distribuzione delle sollecitazioni viene efficacemente descritta applicando i principi fondamentali della meccanica e della scienza dei materiali, in particolare la legge di Hooke per i materiali elastici.

La legge di Hooke afferma che entro i limiti elastici del materiale, lo stress è direttamente proporzionale alla deformazione. In un elemento che subisce un momento flettente, la deformazione in qualsiasi punto è relativa alla sua distanza dall'asse neutro, lo strato centrale che non subisce alcuna deformazione longitudinale. La deformazione varia linearmente da zero sull'asse neutro a un massimo sulle fibre più esterne dell'elemento.

Da ciò si determina che la sollecitazione longitudinale in qualsiasi punto varia anche linearmente con la distanza dall'asse neutro. L'integrazione di questa variazione lineare attraverso l'area della sezione trasversale dell'elemento, dove la sollecitazione è pari a zero sull'asse neutro, conferma che questo asse coincide con il baricentro della sezione trasversale.

Questo processo di integrazione definisce anche l'espressione del momento flettente e definisce anche il momento di inerzia della sezione. Questo calcolo stabilisce inoltre la relazione tra il momento flettente e la sollecitazione massima nel punto più lontano dall'asse neutro e fornisce la sollecitazione flessionale causata dalla flessione dell'elemento.

Bending stress in a symmetric member depends on how the material responds to a bending moment. Within the elastic limit, Hooke's Law applies, so stress is proportional to strain. That relationship helps describe how the member stretches and compresses as it bends.

In a bent member, strain depends on distance from the neutral axis. The neutral axis is the central layer that has no longitudinal strain. Strain is zero at that axis and increases linearly toward the outermost fibers.

Because stress follows strain in elastic materials, longitudinal stress also changes linearly with distance from the neutral axis. When this linear stress pattern is integrated across the cross-sectional area, the neutral axis is shown to match the centroid of the section. The same integration also leads to the bending moment expression and defines the moment of inertia of the section.

These relationships connect bending moment to the maximum stress at the farthest point from the neutral axis. They explain how flexural stress develops in a member under bending. This makes the neutral axis, centroid, and moment of inertia key ideas for analyzing bending in symmetric members.
