Si consideri un'asta costituita da un materiale elastoplastico a sezione rettangolare. Entro il limite elastico, la distribuzione delle sollecitazioni attraverso la sezione è lineare.
All'aumentare del momento flettente, aumenta la sollecitazione massima nell'asta. Il momento flettente massimo si osserva quando la deformazione nell'asta rimane completamente elastica.
Il momento elastico massimo della sezione può essere calcolato sostituendo il rapporto tra il momento d'inerzia e la lunghezza della sezione.
Con un ulteriore aumento del momento flettente, la deformazione plastica avviene in modo uniforme ma con un'entità opposta delle sollecitazioni nelle zone superiore e inferiore. I nuclei elastici sono presenti all'interno di zone plastiche e la sollecitazione per i nuclei elastici varia linearmente con lo spessore. 
Il momento flettente corrispondente alla sollecitazione all'interno dei nuclei elastici può essere stimato analiticamente utilizzando l'equazione del momento elastico massimo.
Man mano che il momento flettente viene aumentato ulteriormente fino al valore limite, la deformazione diventa completamente plastica e il momento plastico dell'asta viene espresso in termini di momento elastico massimo.

Il comportamento dei materiali elastoplastici sotto sollecitazioni di flessione, in particolare negli elementi strutturali con sezioni trasversali rettangolari, è fondamentale per prevedere le risposte dei materiali e comprendere le modalità di cedimento. Inizialmente, quando viene applicato un momento flettente, la distribuzione delle tensioni lungo la sezione segue la legge di Hooke ed è lineare ed elastica. Questa distribuzione fa sì che lo stress aumenti dall'asse neutro al massimo in corrispondenza delle fibre esterne, fino al limite elastico.

Quando il momento flettente supera questa fase elastica iniziale, le fibre esterne iniziano a cedere mentre le fibre interne rimangono elastiche. Questa transizione è contrassegnata da zone plastiche che si formano nella parte superiore e inferiore della sezione, con un nucleo elastico che continua a mostrare variazioni di sollecitazione lineare all'interno di uno spessore ridotto. Durante questa fase, il momento flettente può ancora essere analizzato adattando i calcoli iniziali per la distribuzione delle sollecitazioni elastiche per tenere conto della ridotta area effettiva.

Lo stadio finale della risposta flettente si verifica quando la deformazione lungo l’intera sezione trasversale diventa completamente plastica, noto come momento plastico. Questo momento è il massimo che la sezione può sostenere ed è significativamente superiore al limite elastico. Il momento plastico viene calcolato prendendo la distribuzione dello stress uniforme allo stress di flessione su tutta la sezione.

Elastoplastic members under bending show a clear change in stress as the load increases. For a rectangular cross-section, the first response is elastic. The stress follows Hooke's Law and forms a linear pattern across the section.

In this early stage, stress grows from the neutral axis to the outer fibers. The outer fibers reach the elastic limit first because they carry the highest stress. The inner part of the section stays elastic while the bending moment remains in this range.

When the bending moment becomes larger, the outer fibers begin to yield. Plastic zones then form at the top and bottom of the section. A smaller elastic core still remains in the middle, and stress there continues to vary linearly across the reduced thickness.

The bending moment in this mixed stage can still be studied by adjusting the elastic stress calculation for the smaller effective area. As loading continues, the whole cross-section can become fully plastic. That final condition is called the plastic moment, and it is the maximum moment the section can carry. It is much higher than the elastic limit and is found by assuming a uniform stress distribution at the yield stress across the entire section.
