La sollecitazione e la deformazione hanno una relazione lineare durante la fase di scarico e possono essere applicate formule di flessione elastica.
Le tensioni residue possono essere calcolate utilizzando il principio di sovrapposizione. In primo luogo, per ottenere la sollecitazione residua si sommano le sollecitazioni dovute al momento flettente durante la fase di carico, corrispondente alla natura elastoplastica, e le sollecitazioni dovute al momento flettente opposto durante la fase di scarico, corrispondente alla natura elastica.

Nello studio di elementi elastoplastici soggetti a momenti flettenti, la comprensione delle fasi di carico e scarico è fondamentale per valutare il comportamento del materiale e l'integrità strutturale. Tali tensioni residue vengono calcolate utilizzando il principio di sovrapposizione, combinando le tensioni della fase di carico elastoplastico con quelle della fase di scarico elastico.

Durante lo scarico, la relazione sforzo-deformazione diventa nuovamente lineare, consentendo l'uso di formule di flessione elastica. Questa fase è fondamentale per le applicazioni ingegneristiche, poiché le tensioni residue possono influenzare il comportamento strutturale sotto carichi ripetuti, portando potenzialmente a guasti imprevisti. La comprensione di queste dinamiche consente la progettazione di strutture più sicure e affidabili prevedendo e gestendo accuratamente le sollecitazioni che derivano da scenari di carico complessi.

Bending in elastoplastic members shows how a material responds during loading and unloading. At first, the member behaves elastically, so stress is proportional to strain and follows Hooke's Law. This stage continues until the bending moment becomes large enough to pass the yield strength.

Once yield strength is exceeded, plastic deformation begins. Plastic deformation means the material does not fully return to its original shape. It leaves permanent strain and deformation even after the load is removed.

When the bending moment is reduced back to zero, unloading begins. The stress path does not retrace the original loading path in an elastoplastic member. Instead, it follows a new linear path, which shows that residual stresses remain in the material.

Residual stresses are the stresses that stay behind because plastic strain is irreversible. They can be found by superposition, which combines the stresses from elastoplastic loading with the stresses from elastic unloading. During unloading, the stress-strain relationship becomes linear again, so elastic flexure formulas can be used.

This unloading behavior matters in engineering because residual stresses can affect how a structure responds to repeated loads. They may contribute to unexpected failure if they are not considered. Understanding loading, yielding, and unloading helps engineers design safer and more reliable structures.
