Una trave in legno semplicemente supportata deve essere progettata per sostenere un carico distribuito. La lunghezza e la larghezza della trave sono note, insieme ai valori di sollecitazione normale consentiti. La profondità del raggio deve essere determinata.
Per risolvere questo problema, l'intera trave è considerata come un corpo libero e gli equilibri di momento e forza sono scritti per determinare le reazioni ai supporti.
Vengono quindi disegnati i diagrammi della forza di taglio e del momento flettente per la trave. Il valore del momento flettente è zero ad entrambe le estremità.
Il valore massimo assoluto del momento flettente viene quindi determinato considerando l'area sotto la curva di taglio.
Il modulo di sezione minimo ammissibile viene ora calcolato utilizzando il valore assoluto del momento flettente e la tensione ammissibile data.
La profondità minima richiesta nella trave in legno viene infine determinata utilizzando il rapporto tra le dimensioni della trave e il modulo di sezione minimo consentito.
Questa profondità è il minimo necessario per garantire che la trave possa sopportare in sicurezza i carichi imposti senza superare la sollecitazione consentita.

La qualità e la specie del legno influenzano in modo significativo questo stress ammissibile, sottolineando l'importanza della selezione del materiale nei calcoli di progettazione.

La fase finale del processo di progettazione è il calcolo della profondità minima della trave. Questo passaggio garantisce che la trave possa sopportare i carichi applicati senza superare i limiti di stress o deflessione consentiti. Questo passaggio richiede un'attenta considerazione della geometria della trave e del suo modulo di sezione calcolato. Timber beam design under a distributed load uses the beam’s size and the wood’s properties to keep the structure safe. The beam’s length and width are known at the start. The first step is to treat the beam as a free body. A free-body diagram shows the forces and moments acting on the beam. From this, the support reactions can be found by balancing forces and moments.

Next, shear force and bending moment diagrams are drawn. The shear force diagram shows how internal shear changes along the beam. The bending moment diagram shows where the beam bends most. For a uniformly distributed load, the maximum bending moment usually occurs at the midpoint.

The design then uses the maximum bending moment to find the minimum section modulus needed. Section modulus is a measure of a beam’s resistance to bending. It is found by dividing the maximum moment by the allowable stress. The timber’s grade and species are important here because they set that stress value.

The final step is calculating the minimum beam depth. This depth must be large enough to meet the bending requirement and help keep deflection within limits. By using the beam geometry and the required section modulus, the design ensures the timber beam can carry the load safely.
