In questi casi, le funzioni di singolarità consentono la rappresentazione della forza di taglio con una singola espressione matematica nonostante le condizioni di carico variabili.
Per derivare le funzioni di singolarità, viene disegnato un diagramma di corpo libero della trave che viene tagliato concettualmente in punti specifici. Quindi, viene determinata la funzione di singolarità che rappresenta la forza di taglio in ciascuna porzione del raggio.
Applicando la convenzione secondo cui le parentesi angolari o le parentesi di Macaulay sono sostituite con parentesi quando x è maggiore o uguale a l, e con zero quando x è minore di l, queste funzioni di singolarità possono essere differenziate o integrate come le normali espressioni matematiche.
