Una trave a sbalzo, quando sottoposta a un carico alla sua estremità libera, sviluppa il momento flettente massimo alla sua estremità fissa.
Fino a quando il momento flettente non supera il limite elastico della trave, la sollecitazione normale rimane al di sotto del carico di snervamento. Oltre questo punto, lo snervamento inizia dall'estremità fissa.
Il confine tra la zona elastica e quella plastica può essere ottenuto misurando il mezzo spessore dell'anima elastica.
Quando il carico raggiunge una certa soglia, la sezione vicino all'estremità fissa diventa completamente plastica, formando una cerniera in plastica. Questa cerniera rappresenta il carico massimo che la trave può supportare.
In una sezione parzialmente plastica, le normali sollecitazioni sulle facce sono distribuite uniformemente e uguali al carico di snervamento.
La forza di taglio sulla faccia inferiore è zero, risultando in un valore medio zero della sollecitazione di taglio. Il taglio verticale è distribuito interamente sulla porzione elastica della sezione trasversale.
Al diminuire dell'area della porzione elastica, la massima sollecitazione di taglio aumenta e alla fine raggiunge il carico di snervamento, contribuendo al cedimento finale della trave.

La deformazione plastica rappresenta un concetto fondamentale nella scienza dei materiali, che spiega il cambiamento irreversibile nella forma di un materiale quando subisce stress oltre la sua capacità elastica. Questo fenomeno è importante nell'ingegneria strutturale, specialmente nella progettazione e nell'analisi delle travi a sbalzo—strutture che sono fissate saldamente a un'estremità e sopportano carichi all'estremità opposta. Quando queste travi sono sottoposte a carichi compresi nel loro campo elastico, torneranno alla loro forma originale quando il carico viene rimosso, dimostrando la proprietà di elasticità. Tuttavia, il superamento di questo limite elastico porta alla deformazione plastica, che inizia all'estremità fissa a causa del momento flettente massimo e si manifesta come una piegatura permanente nota come "cerniera plastica".

Cantilever beams show how a material bends, yields, and can eventually fail under load. A cantilever beam is fixed firmly at one end and loaded at the other end. When the load stays within the elastic range, the beam returns to its original shape after the load is removed. That reversible behavior is called elasticity.

If the load goes beyond the elastic limit, the beam begins plastic deformation. Plastic deformation means the shape change is permanent. In a cantilever beam, this change starts at the fixed end because the bending moment is greatest there. The bent region at that point is called a plastic hinge.

As the load increases, the plastic hinge spreads toward the free end of the beam. This marks the shift from reversible deformation to irreversible deformation. The stress pattern in the beam also changes. It no longer stays uniform and directly proportional to the applied load, and this change helps define the yield point of the material.

If loading continues, the beam will fracture. Knowing how cantilever beams behave under stress is important in structural engineering. It helps engineers design structures that are safe and still economical. These structures must be able to handle the loads they are expected to carry.
