Con il diagramma di corpo libero e i vincoli esterni di reazione, viene costruito un diagramma del momento flettente, che rappresenta la flessione della trave.
Il diagramma del momento flettente mostra che la trave curva verso l'alto tra l'inizio e un punto specifico a causa di un momento flettente positivo, e curva verso il basso da quel punto alla fine della trave a causa di un momento flettente negativo.
Il valore più grande della curva o il raggio di curvatura più piccolo si verifica in corrispondenza del supporto dove il momento flettente è al massimo.
Per un'analisi dettagliata e la progettazione di una trave, è fondamentale disporre di dati precisi sulla deflessione e sulla pendenza della trave in vari punti, con particolare attenzione alla comprensione della deflessione massima.
