Qui, il rapporto tra la forza assiale e l'area è la sollecitazione e il rapporto tra l'allungamento e la lunghezza originale dell'asta è la deformazione prodotta.
All'interno della regione elastica, la densità di energia della deformazione può essere espressa in termini di modulo di elasticità.
La curva sforzo-deformazione mostra una relazione lineare nella regione elastica, il che implica che la densità di energia della deformazione segue la legge di Hooke. Qui, dopo aver rimosso lo stress, la deformazione diventa zero. Questa regione di densità energetica è chiamata modulo di resilienza.
Nella regione plastica, rimane una certa tensione permanente anche dopo aver rimosso lo stress. Quindi, solo una parte della densità di energia della deformazione viene recuperata e la densità di energia rimanente viene spesa per deformare l'oggetto sotto forma di calore. 
L'area totale sotto la curva è chiamata modulo di tenacità e rappresenta la densità di energia totale richiesta per rompere l'asta.

Strain-Energy Density

Comprendere la densità dell'energia di deformazione nei materiali sottoposti a carico assiale è fondamentale per valutarne il comportamento meccanico e la durabilità. Quando un'asta è sottoposta a un tale carico, si allunga e immagazzina energia, nota come energia di deformazione, come energia potenziale all'interno del materiale. Quest’energia viene misurata in termini di energia per unità di volume.

Nella regione elastica di un materiale, la relazione tra sforzo e deformazione è lineare e segue la legge di Hooke. La densità di energia di deformazione in questa regione è calcolata dall'area sotto la curva sforzo-deformazione fino al limite elastico. Quest’energia immagazzinata è recuperabile e viene definita modulo di resilienza, che indica quanta energia il materiale può assorbire e ritornare comunque alla sua forma originale dopo lo scarico.

Oltre il limite elastico il materiale si comporta plasticamente deformandosi permanentemente. In questa regione plastica solo una parte dell'energia immagazzinata è recuperabile mediante scarico; il resto viene perso sotto forma di calore o utilizzato in deformazione permanente. L'energia totale che un materiale può assorbire prima della rottura viene misurata dal modulo di tenacità.

Questo valore è fondamentale per le applicazioni che richiedono elevata resistenza agli urti o duttilità, aiutando nella selezione dei materiali per applicazioni specifiche e nella progettazione di strutture per resistere a carichi meccanici.

Energy stored in a rod under axial load helps show how a material will respond to stretching and breaking. When the rod elongates, it stores strain energy as potential energy inside the material. Strain energy density is the amount of that energy per unit volume.

In the elastic region, stress and strain have a linear relationship that follows Hooke's Law. The strain energy density in this region is found from the area under the stress-strain curve up to the elastic limit. This recoverable energy is called the modulus of resilience. It shows how much energy a material can absorb and still return to its original shape when the load is removed.

After the elastic limit, the material enters the plastic region. In this stage, the material deforms permanently, so only part of the stored energy comes back during unloading. The rest is lost as heat or used in permanent deformation. The total energy a material can absorb before rupture is called the modulus of toughness. This value is important when choosing materials for impact resistance and ductility, and for designing structures that must handle mechanical loads.
