Il teorema di Castigliano è utile per determinare spostamenti e rotazioni in strutture sottoposte a deformazioni elastiche.
Afferma che la derivata parziale dell'energia di deformazione elastica relativa a un dato carico è equivalente allo spostamento nel punto di applicazione del particolare carico.
Allo stesso modo, supponiamo che la struttura sia soggetta a coppie. In questo caso, l'angolo di rotazione della struttura nel punto di applicazione di una coppia viene calcolato differenziando parzialmente l'energia di deformazione rispetto alla coppia applicata.
Per le strutture soggette a torsione a causa di coppie applicate lentamente, l'angolo di torsione per una sezione dell'albero può essere calcolato prendendo la derivata parziale dell'energia di deformazione rispetto alla coppia applicata.
Se una trave con sezioni trasversali non uniformi subisce una deformazione a causa del carico, l'energia di deformazione è espressa in termini di integrale. Castigliano's theorem uses strain energy to find deflection and rotation in elastic structures. Strain energy is the work done by external loads during elastic deformation. The theorem links that energy to the movement caused by the load.

The key idea is simple. The partial derivative of the total strain energy with respect to a specific force gives the displacement at the point where that force acts. The same method also works for a moment, where the derivative gives the rotation at the point of loading.
