Il raddrizzatore a ponte, fondamentale per la conversione da CA a CC, è costituito da quattro diodi disposti in configurazione a ponte.
Questa disposizione consente di rettificare sia la metà positiva che quella negativa della forma d'onda.
Durante i semicicli positivi della tensione di ingresso, il raddrizzatore a ponte conduce la corrente attraverso i diodi D1 e D2 e il resistore R, mentre i diodi D3 e D4 sono polarizzati inversamente.
Al contrario, durante i semicicli negativi, la tensione secondaria è negativa e la corrente scorre attraverso i diodi D3 e D4 e il resistore R, con i diodi D1 e D2 polarizzati inversamente.
Nonostante i cicli variabili, la direzione del flusso di corrente rimane costante, risultando in una tensione di uscita CC pulsante costantemente positiva.
La tensione inversa di picco viene determinata durante i semicicli positivi ed è circa la metà del valore di un raddrizzatore a onda intera con trasformatore a presa centrale.
Il raddrizzatore a ponte richiede meno spire per l'avvolgimento secondario del trasformatore, rendendolo più efficiente e compatto.
L'efficienza del raddrizzatore a ponte può essere migliorata utilizzando diodi Schottky o incorporando un filtro condensatore, che riduce le perdite e migliora la qualità dell'uscita CC.

Il raddrizzatore a ponte è essenziale nell'elettronica per convertire in modo efficiente la corrente alternata (CA) in corrente continua (CC). Operativamente, il raddrizzatore a ponte consente il flusso di corrente attraverso due dei suoi diodi durante ciascun semiciclo dell'ingresso CA. Nello specifico, durante i semicicli positivi, i diodi D_1 e D_2 conducono, consentendo alla corrente di passare attraverso il resistore di carico R, mentre i diodi D_3 e D4 sono polarizzati inversamente e non conduttivi. Questa azione si inverte durante i semicicli negativi, dove i diodi D_3 e D_4 conducono e D_1 e D_2 sono polarizzati inversamente. Nonostante la natura alternata della tensione di ingresso, la corrente attraverso il resistore di carico R rimane in un'unica direzione, garantendo un'uscita CC costante e pulsante positiva.

La tensione inversa di picco (PIV) richiesta è la tensione del diodo (V_D) sottratta dalla tensione della sorgente (V_S), ottenendo un valore che è circa la metà del raddrizzatore a onda intera con un trasformatore con presa centrale. Pertanto, il raddrizzatore a ponte è più efficiente e consente un design più compatto ed economico.

Inoltre, l'avvolgimento secondario del trasformatore in un circuito raddrizzatore a ponte richiede meno spire rispetto a quello di una configurazione con trasformatore con presa centrale, migliorandone l'efficienza complessiva. Le prestazioni di un raddrizzatore a ponte possono anche essere notevolmente migliorate integrando diodi Schottky, noti per la loro bassa caduta di tensione diretta e tempi di recupero rapidi, o aggiungendo un filtro condensatore per ridurre al minimo il ripple, producendo così un'uscita CC di qualità superiore.

A bridge rectifier converts alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC) using four diodes arranged in a bridge layout. It is used to turn both halves of the AC waveform into a single-direction output. That makes it an important part of many electronics circuits.

During the positive half-cycle, diodes D1 and D2 conduct. Current then flows through the load resistor R. At the same time, D3 and D4 are reverse-biased, so they do not conduct.

The action switches during the negative half-cycle. Diodes D3 and D4 conduct, while D1 and D2 are reverse-biased. Even though the input keeps alternating, the current through the load resistor still moves in one direction. The output is a steady positive pulsating DC signal.

A bridge rectifier can offer better voltage regulation and output stability than a half-wave rectifier or a full-wave center-tapped rectifier. It also needs a peak inverse voltage (PIV) of about V D subtracted from V S, which is roughly half the PIV needed in a center-tapped full-wave rectifier. This helps make the design more compact and cost-effective.

The transformer secondary in a bridge rectifier circuit also needs fewer turns than a center-tapped transformer setup. Performance can improve further with Schottky diodes, which have a low forward voltage drop and fast recovery time. A capacitor filter can also reduce ripple and produce higher-quality DC output.
