Un circuito a morsetto è costituito da un segnale di ingresso variabile nel tempo, un condensatore e un diodo. La tensione di uscita viene misurata attraverso il diodo.
Durante il semiciclo negativo del segnale di ingresso dell'onda quadra, il diodo è polarizzato in avanti, con conseguente tensione zero attraverso il diodo.
Ma allo stesso tempo, il condensatore si carica al valore di picco del segnale di ingresso.
Durante il semiciclo positivo dell'onda quadra, il diodo diventa polarizzato inversamente. In questo caso, la tensione di ingresso e il condensatore carico fungono da fonte di tensione combinata.
In questo momento, la tensione attraverso il diodo è il doppio di quella di ingresso. Questo circuito agisce come un morsetto positivo.
Quando un carico è collegato attraverso il diodo, la corrente di uscita fluisce dal carico attraverso il condensatore. Ciò riduce esponenzialmente la tensione di uscita in base alla costante di tempo RC. 
Quando la tensione di ingresso diminuisce, la tensione di uscita segue e carica il condensatore. Quando la tensione di ingresso aumenta di nuovo, il condensatore si scarica e il ciclo si ripete

Un circuito clamper, noto anche come ripristinatore CC, rappresenta una variante specializzata del circuito raddrizzatore, notevole per il suo metodo di portare l'uscita attraverso il diodo anziché il condensatore. Questa configurazione si presta a diverse applicazioni distintive, in particolare nella gestione degli ingressi ad onda quadra.

All'interno di questo circuito, l'orientamento del diodo spinge il condensatore a caricarsi fino al livello del picco più negativo del segnale di ingresso. Una volta raggiunto questo stato, il diodo cessa di condurre, bloccando di fatto la tensione del condensatore a un livello costante. Questo meccanismo fa sì che la tensione di uscita sia la forma d'onda di ingresso originale, elevata di un valore pari alla tensione ai capi del condensatore (VC).

La funzione principale del circuito clamper è regolare la linea di base della forma d'onda. Per impostazione predefinita, aumenta il punto più basso della forma d'onda. L'alterazione della polarità del diodo inverte questo effetto, bloccando invece il picco più alto della forma d'onda a zero volt. Questa capacità è particolarmente vantaggiosa nelle applicazioni che coinvolgono la trasmissione di segnali a impulsi attraverso sistemi con accoppiamento capacitivo. Poiché l'accoppiamento capacitivo elimina intrinsecamente la componente CC di un segnale, il circuito clamper svolge un ruolo fondamentale nel ripristinare questo livello CC, facilitando un'accurata modulazione del ciclo di lavoro.

L'inclusione di un resistore di carico sul diodo introduce ulteriore complessità nel funzionamento del circuito. In tali configurazioni, il condensatore si scarica ogni volta che l'uscita sale sopra il livello del suolo, alterando leggermente la tensione di uscita. Il condensatore ripristina la propria carica in condizioni stazionarie, garantendo l'efficacia del circuito nel ripristinare e mantenere la componente CC desiderata all'interno di un segnale.

Clamper Circuit

A clamper circuit, or DC restorer, shifts a waveform up or down by adding a DC level. It is a special form of rectifier circuit. In this setup, the output is taken across the diode instead of across the capacitor.

The circuit works well with square wave inputs and other pulse signals. The diode direction lets the capacitor charge to the most negative peak of the input signal. After that, the diode stops conducting. The capacitor then holds that voltage at a steady value.

As a result, the output becomes the original input waveform shifted by the capacitor voltage, V C. By default, the circuit raises the lowest part of the waveform. If the diode polarity is reversed, the circuit clamps the highest peak at zero volts instead.

This function is useful when signals pass through capacitive coupling. Capacitive coupling removes the DC component of a signal. The clamper circuit restores that DC level, which helps preserve accurate duty cycle modulation. Adding a load resistor across the diode changes the circuit behavior further. In that case, the capacitor can discharge whenever the output rises above ground level. Even then, the capacitor recharges in steady-state conditions and continues to support the restored DC component.
