I diodi a barriera Schottky sono dispositivi a semiconduttore formati dall'unione di uno strato metallico con un materiale semiconduttore di tipo n moderatamente drogato.
Quando un metallo entra in contatto con un semiconduttore, il trasferimento di carica allinea i livelli di Fermi.
Se il livello iniziale di Fermi del semiconduttore è superiore al livello di Fermi pre-contatto del metallo, aumenta il suo potenziale, formando una regione di esaurimento associata alla barriera Schottky.
Con i semiconduttori di tipo n, questa regione contiene cariche positive da ioni donatori non compensati, allineandosi con le cariche negative del metallo.
Con i semiconduttori di tipo p, il processo è invertito, portando a una regione di esaurimento con cariche negative che corrispondono alle cariche positive del metallo.
La giunzione metallo-semiconduttore si comporta come un diodo, consentendo il flusso di corrente unidirezionale dall'anodo metallico al catodo del semiconduttore mentre agisce come un circuito aperto nella direzione opposta.
I diodi Schottky conducono principalmente la corrente attraverso i portatori di maggioranza e mancano di effetti di accumulo di carica dei portatori di minoranza, il che li rende più veloci per le applicazioni di commutazione.
La loro caduta di tensione diretta conduttiva è inferiore a quella dei diodi a giunzione pn, riducendo la dissipazione di potenza.

Poiché opera principalmente attraverso i portatori maggioritari e non dispone degli effetti di accumulo della carica dei portatori minoritari, è significativamente più veloce, il che lo rende ideale per le applicazioni di commutazione. Schottky Barrier Diode

Schottky barrier diodes use a metal-semiconductor junction to control current flow. They are built by combining a metal layer with a moderately doped n-type semiconductor. This contact creates the Schottky barrier, which gives the diode its one-way current behavior.

When the metal touches the semiconductor, charge transfer occurs. The Fermi levels of the two materials align, and a depletion region forms near the contact area. In an n-type semiconductor, this region contains uncompensated positive donor ions. In a p-type semiconductor, the depletion region contains negative charges, which also helps define the direction of current flow.

Schottky diodes differ from conventional pn-junction diodes in speed and efficiency. They mainly use majority carriers, so they do not store minority-carrier charge. That makes them much faster for switching applications. They also have a lower forward voltage drop than pn-junction diodes, which reduces power loss during operation.

These properties make Schottky barrier diodes useful in circuits that need fast response and low power dissipation. Common uses include voltage clamping and transient protection. Their quick switching and low forward voltage make them important parts of modern electronic circuit design.
