La linearità è una proprietà del sistema con una relazione diretta input-output, che combina omogeneità e additività.
L'omogeneità impone che se un input viene moltiplicato per una costante, l'output viene moltiplicato per la stessa costante. L'additività significa che la risposta a più input è la somma delle loro risposte individuali.
Un sistema che ha sia proprietà di omogeneità che di additività è classificato come sistema lineare.
I sistemi lineari includono circuiti con resistori, condensatori e induttori che aderiscono al principio di sovrapposizione.
Al contrario, i sistemi che non rispettano l'equazione di linearità sono classificati come non lineari, spesso includendo dispositivi come raddrizzatori e diodi.
Un sistema causale è caratterizzato da una risposta di corrente indipendente dai valori di input futuri. Un esempio può essere il movimento di un'auto, che non può prevedere le future azioni di guida.
I sistemi non causali, come i filtri ideali, non possono essere realizzati fisicamente e non seguono il principio di causalità.
I sistemi dinamici mostrano memoria, in cui l'output è influenzato sia da input passati che futuri.
I sistemi statici sono sistemi senza memoria o istantanei in cui l'uscita di corrente si basa esclusivamente sull'ingresso presente.

L’additività significa che la risposta alla somma di più input è la somma delle loro singole risposte. Per gli input x_1(t) e x_2(t) che producono rispettivamente output y_1(t) e y_2(t):

Combinando l’omogeneità e l’additività si ottiene l'equazione di un sistema lineare:

I sistemi lineari includono i circuiti con i resistori, i condensatori e gli induttori che aderiscono al principio di sovrapposizione. Al contrario, i sistemi che non rispettano l'equazione di linearità sono classificati come non lineari, come i raddrizzatori e i diodi.

Un sistema causale è un sistema in cui la risposta attuale è indipendente dai valori di input futuri. Ad esempio, il movimento di un'auto non può prevedere le azioni di guida future, rendendolo un sistema causale. Al contrario, i sistemi non causali come i filtri ideali non possono essere realizzati fisicamente perché non seguono il principio di causalità.

I sistemi dinamici presentano una memoria nella quale l'output dipende dagli input sia passati che presenti. Un esempio è un circuito elettrico con condensatori o induttori, in cui l'output attuale è influenzato dagli input passati. I sistemi statici, noti anche come sistemi senza memoria o istantanei, hanno output basati esclusivamente sull'input attuale, come un semplice circuito di resistori in cui la tensione di output è una funzione diretta della tensione di input corrente.

System properties such as linearity, causality, and memory help describe how a system responds to input. These ideas are useful for studying and designing systems in engineering. A system can be checked by looking at how its output changes with different inputs.

Linearity means the input-output relationship follows homogeneity and additivity. Homogeneity says that if an input x(t) is multiplied by a constant c, the output y(t) is multiplied by the same constant. Additivity means the response to a sum of inputs equals the sum of the separate responses. Together, these rules define a linear system, and circuits with resistors, capacitors, and inductors can follow the superposition principle.

Systems that do not satisfy the linearity equation are non-linear. Diodes and rectifiers are examples of non-linear systems. Causality is another key property. A causal system depends only on the present input and past inputs, not on future values.

A car’s motion is a simple example of a causal system, because it cannot depend on future driving actions. Non-causal systems, such as ideal filters, are not physically realizable because they do not follow causality. Memory is the last major property. Dynamic systems have memory, so their output depends on past and present inputs, as in circuits with capacitors or inductors. Static systems, also called memoryless or instantaneous systems, depend only on the present input. A simple resistor circuit is an example, since its output voltage is a direct function of the current input voltage.
