Una serie di Fourier è una tecnica matematica che scompone le funzioni periodiche in una serie infinita di armoniche sinusoidali.
La serie trigonometrica di Fourier rappresenta una funzione periodica con un periodo specifico utilizzando funzioni seno e coseno. La frequenza di queste funzioni è inversamente proporzionale al periodo della funzione originale.
I termini costanti e il contributo individuale di ogni funzione seno e coseno alla funzione originale sono compresi utilizzando i coefficienti di Fourier. Il calcolo di questi coefficienti comporta l'integrazione su un unico periodo.
Affinché una serie di Fourier rappresenti una funzione periodica, devono essere soddisfatte le condizioni di Dirichlet.
La prima condizione richiede che la funzione abbia un integrale finito su un periodo.
La seconda condizione afferma che la variazione della funzione deve essere limitata all'interno di un dato intervallo.
Infine, la funzione deve avere un numero finito di discontinuità all'interno di un intervallo specifico, nessuna delle quali può essere infinita.
