Il teorema di Parseval afferma che se una funzione è periodica, allora la potenza media del segnale in un periodo è uguale alla somma delle grandezze al quadrato di tutti i coefficienti complessi di Fourier.
Per convalidare il teorema di Parseval, si supponga che la funzione abbia una serie complessa di Fourier di una forma standard. Sostituendo questo e risolvendo ulteriormente si ottiene la dimostrazione del teorema.
È interessante notare che il teorema di Parseval può anche essere espresso in termini dei coefficienti di Fourier della serie trigonometrica di Fourier.
Nell'elaborazione audio, il teorema di Parseval viene utilizzato per confrontare l'energia di un'onda sonora originale con la sua versione compressa.
L'interpretazione ingegneristica di questo teorema fornisce spunti pratici. Se la funzione rappresenta un segnale elettrico, come la corrente o la tensione, il quadrato della funzione rappresenta la potenza istantanea in un resistore da 1 ohm.

Il teorema di Parseval è fondamentale nelle applicazioni pratiche, in particolare nell'elaborazione audio. Questo confronto è essenziale per garantire che il processo di compressione non degradi significativamente la qualità del segnale audio perdendo troppa energia.

Da una prospettiva ingegneristica, il teorema di Parseval offre spunti preziosi.
