Esistono quattro tipi generali di sistemi secondari.
I singoli trasformatori di distribuzione servono singoli clienti, in particolare quelli con carichi elevati o problemi di bassa tensione. Sebbene più costosi, eliminano la necessità di una rete secondaria.
Un sistema principale secondario comune collega un alimentatore primario a più clienti utilizzando trasformatori di distribuzione, gestendo in modo efficiente le variazioni di carico senza cadute di tensione significative e spesso con sezioni isolate per la sicurezza.
Le reti secondarie, che si trovano tipicamente nelle aree urbane ad alta densità, sono alimentate da più alimentatori primari attraverso trasformatori di rete, garantendo il funzionamento anche in caso di guasto di due alimentatori.

Le tensioni secondarie tipiche negli Stati Uniti, includono 120/240 V per uso residenziale, 208Y/120 V per uso residenziale e commerciale e 480Y/277 V per uso industriale e commerciale in grattacieli.

Nelle aree residenziali, il servizio monofase a tre fili da 120/240 V, è comunemente utilizzato per l’illuminazione, le prese e i grandi elettrodomestici. Le aree urbane con carichi ad alta densità, utilizzano spesso il servizio trifase a quattro fili da 208Y/120 V, per l’illuminazione e i carichi motore. Gli edifici alti e le aree industriali, utilizzano in genere il servizio trifase a quattro fili da 480Y/277 V, per supportare apparecchiature elettriche pesanti. Una progettazione adeguata dei sistemi di distribuzione, garantisce che i livelli di tensione del cliente rimangano entro i limiti dell'American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Per mantenere la tensione entro questi limiti, vengono impiegati trasformatori con commutazione di carico e regolatori di tensione.

Il trasformatore di distribuzione individuale per cliente è comune nelle aree rurali. Questo sistema, utilizza un trasformatore dedicato per ogni cliente, adatto per le lunghe distanze che separano i clienti. Un sistema principale secondario comune, collega più servizi a un alimentatore primario, tramite uno o più trasformatori. Sfrutta la diversità tra le richieste dei clienti, consentendo una capacità di trasformatore inferiore rispetto ai sistemi di trasformatori individuali. Le reti o griglie secondarie, sono utilizzate nelle aree urbane con elevate densità di carico. Sono altamente affidabili e sono costituite da alimentatori interconnessi da più trasformatori. Funzionano in modo continuo; i guasti sono isolati da protettori di rete. Una rete spot, è costituita da una rete secondaria che serve un singolo carico concentrato, come un edificio alto. Le reti spot sono alimentate da due o più alimentatori primari, tramite trasformatori di rete. Garantiscono elevata affidabilità e flessibilità del servizio.

I sistemi di distribuzione secondaria, sono essenziali per mantenere un'erogazione di energia affidabile ed efficiente, soddisfacendo le diverse esigenze dei clienti, in varie regioni e applicazioni.

Secondary distribution carries electrical energy from distribution transformers to customer meters at usable voltage levels. Common U.S. secondary voltages include 120/240 V for homes, 208Y/120 V for residential and commercial buildings, and 480Y/277 V for industrial sites and high-rise buildings.

In residential areas, 120/240 V single-phase, three-wire service is often used for lighting, outlets, and large appliances. Dense urban areas may use 208Y/120 V three-phase, four-wire service because it can supply lighting and motor loads. High-rise and industrial locations often rely on 480Y/277 V three-phase, four-wire service to run heavy electrical equipment.

Good distribution design keeps customer voltage within American National Standards Institute, or ANSI, limits. Load-tap-changing transformers and voltage regulators help hold voltage in that range. In rural areas, an individual distribution transformer per customer is common. This setup uses a dedicated transformer for each customer and works well when homes are far apart.

A common secondary main system connects several services to a primary feeder through one or more transformers. It uses diversity in customer demand, so the transformer capacity can be smaller than in an individual transformer system. Secondary networks, or grids, are used in cities with high load density. They are highly reliable, use interconnected feeders from multiple transformers, and keep operating continuously while network protectors isolate faults.

A spot network is a type of secondary network that serves one concentrated load, such as a high-rise building. It is fed by two or more primary feeders through network transformers. This arrangement provides high service reliability and flexibility. Secondary distribution systems help deliver power efficiently for different customer needs across rural, urban, commercial, and industrial settings.

Electric power distribution moves electricity from power plants to homes, businesses, and industry through transmission and distribution networks. Power plants convert energy from coal, gas, nuclear, water, and wind into electrical energy.
