Sono vantaggiosi quando l'output è difficile da quantificare o la misurazione precisa non è economicamente fattibile.
I sistemi a circuito chiuso includono uno o più collegamenti di feedback dall'uscita all'ingresso per un controllo più accurato.
In un sistema di controllo del minimo a circuito chiuso, qualsiasi differenza tra il regime minimo desiderato e la velocità effettiva viene rilevata e corretta regolando l'angolo dell'acceleratore. Quindi, a causa dell'uso del feedback, il sistema si ripristina rapidamente dopo un disturbo al valore preimpostato.
Tuttavia, sono più complessi da costruire e sono generalmente più elevati in termini di costi e potenza a causa dell'uso di più componenti.

I sistemi a circuito aperto sono vantaggiosi in scenari in cui la misurazione precisa dell'output è poco pratica o economicamente non fattibile. Sono in genere più semplici e meno costosi da progettare e mantenere grazie alla loro architettura semplice. 

Al contrario, i sistemi di controllo a circuito chiuso o a feedback incorporano uno o più circuiti di feedback che monitorano continuamente l'output e regolano di conseguenza l'input per mantenere le prestazioni desiderate. Questa configurazione migliora significativamente la precisione e la reattività. Ad esempio, in un sistema di controllo del minimo a circuito chiuso utilizzato nei motori automobilistici, il sistema monitora costantemente il minimo e lo confronta con la velocità desiderata. Se viene rilevata una discrepanza, il sistema regola l'angolo dell'acceleratore per correggere la velocità. Questo meccanismo di feedback consente al sistema di riprendersi rapidamente dai disturbi e mantenere il valore preimpostato, garantendo prestazioni costanti. 


Nonostante la loro precisione superiore e la capacità di gestire i disturbi, i sistemi a circuito chiuso sono intrinsecamente più complessi. Richiedono componenti aggiuntivi per il monitoraggio e il feedback, il che aumenta la complessità di progettazione, i costi e il consumo energetico. La scelta tra i sistemi a circuito aperto e a circuito chiuso dipende dai requisiti specifici dell'applicazione, tra cui la necessità di precisione, la fattibilità della misurazione dell'output e le considerazioni economiche.

Control systems are key parts of automation and engineering. They are usually grouped into open-loop and closed-loop systems. The difference depends on whether the output is fed back to the controller.

An open-loop control system works without feedback from the output. It has two main parts: the controller and the controlled process. The controller receives an input signal and drives the process to reach the desired result. Because it does not check the output, the system does not correct itself automatically.

A washing machine that runs for a preset time is a common open-loop example. It keeps running on the set cycle and does not measure how clean the clothes are. Open-loop systems are useful when measuring the output is difficult or too expensive. They are also simpler and cheaper to design and maintain.

A closed-loop control system, also called a feedback control system, uses one or more feedback loops. These loops monitor the output and adjust the input to keep the system near the desired value. This feedback improves accuracy and responsiveness.

An automotive idle-speed control system is a clear example of a closed-loop system. It monitors engine idle speed and compares it with the target speed. If the speed changes, the system adjusts the throttle angle to correct it. This helps the system recover quickly from disturbances and keep a steady preset value.

Closed-loop systems are more complex than open-loop systems. They need extra parts for monitoring and feedback, which can increase design complexity, cost, and power use. The best choice depends on the application’s needs, including precision, whether the output can be measured, and cost.
