Nei sistemi di controllo, questi blocchi simboleggiano vari componenti come gli impianti, i controller, gli attuatori e i sensori. Nell'esempio precedente, un comparatore confronta la temperatura impostata con quella misurata e accende e spegne la caldaia, a seconda del caso. In un altro esempio, un impianto rappresenta il processo principale o il sistema controllato, mentre un controller regola l'input all'impianto in base al feedback. Gli attuatori convertono i segnali di controllo in azioni fisiche e i sensori misurano l'output, fornendo dei feedback al sistema.

In un sistema di controllo a feedback, la variabile controllata viene continuamente confrontata con l'input di riferimento per produrre un segnale di errore. Block diagrams show the input-output relationships in a system. They help students see how one signal affects another. A heating system is a simple example. The set temperature turns the furnace on, and the room warms to the desired level.

Block diagrams can model both linear and nonlinear systems. Linear systems often use Laplace transform variables. Nonlinear systems are usually described with time domain variables. This makes block diagrams useful for many kinds of control problems.

A block diagram usually includes comparators, blocks, and feedback loops. A comparator is a junction where signals are compared. It can add or subtract signals. In control systems, this comparison creates an error signal that leads to corrective action.

Blocks stand for the system equations. They may be shown in the time domain or as transfer functions in the frequency domain. In control systems, a block can represent a plant, controller, actuator, or sensor. The plant is the main process being controlled. The controller adjusts the input to the plant based on feedback. The actuator turns the control signal into a physical action, and the sensor measures the output.

In the heating example, the comparator compares the set temperature with the measured temperature. The furnace then cycles on and off as needed. In a feedback control system, the controlled variable is compared again and again with the reference input. This produces an error signal that drives the actuator and helps reduce the error. The sensor changes the physical output back into a signal for comparison.

Feedback can be positive or negative, and each one affects stability and response. Block diagrams may arrange feedback elements in series or in parallel. The overall transfer function comes from combining the transfer functions of each block. This algebra helps describe how the system behaves. Understanding the transfer function is important for checking performance and stability and for meeting design goals.
