I sistemi di controllo della velocità di crociera nelle auto, sono progettati come sistemi multi-input per mantenere la velocità desiderata dal conducente, compensando al contempo i disturbi esterni, come i cambiamenti del terreno. Lo schema a blocchi per un sistema di cruise control, include in genere due input principali: la velocità desiderata impostata dal conducente e qualsiasi disturbo esterno, come la pendenza della strada. Regolando l'acceleratore del motore, il sistema mantiene la velocità del veicolo il più vicino possibile al valore desiderato.

In assenza di disturbi, lo schema a blocchi del cruise control, può essere semplificato in una funzione di trasferimento specifica. Questa funzione di trasferimento rappresenta la relazione tra l'input di velocità desiderato e la velocità effettiva del veicolo.

dove T_d(s), è la funzione di trasferimento dalla velocità desiderata R(s) alla velocità effettiva Y(s).

Al contrario, quando il segnale di ingresso primario (la velocità desiderata) viene annullato, lo schema a blocchi si semplifica in un'altra funzione di trasferimento, che rappresenta la risposta del sistema solo ai disturbi esterni.

La risposta complessiva del cruise control, è la sovrapposizione delle risposte sia alla velocità desiderata, che agli input di disturbo. Ciò può essere rappresentato matematicamente come:

Questo principio di sovrapposizione illustra come il sistema si adatta per mantenere la velocità desiderata, contrastando al contempo le perturbazioni.

In un sistema più complesso, come un aereo, devono essere considerati più input e output. Gli input potrebbero includere segnali di controllo dal pilota, come regolazioni di alettoni, timone ed elevatore, mentre gli output sono le risposte dell'aereo, come cambiamenti di rollio, beccheggio e imbardata. La complessità di un tale sistema, richiede l'uso di vettori e matrici, per rappresentare succintamente i più input e output.

I diagrammi a blocchi per sistemi multivariabili come gli aerei, possono essere semplificati usando rappresentazioni vettoriali. Input e output sono espressi come vettori e le loro relazioni sono catturate in una matrice di trasferimento. I cicli di feedback in questi sistemi, possono anche essere descritti usando equazioni di matrice, consentendo una rappresentazione completa delle dinamiche del sistema.

Cruise control systems show how a control system can handle more than one input. In a car, the driver sets a desired speed, and the system also responds to outside disturbances such as changes in road slope. The throttle is adjusted so the vehicle speed stays as close as possible to the target value.

When the disturbance is ignored, the cruise control block diagram can be reduced to a transfer function. This transfer function describes how the desired speed input, R(s), affects the actual speed output, Y(s). When the desired speed signal is set to zero, the diagram can be reduced in a different way. That case gives the transfer function for the disturbance input, D(s), to the vehicle speed, Y(s).

The full system response comes from adding these two responses together. This is the principle of superposition. It shows how the cruise control system works to track the driver’s setting while also reducing the effect of disturbances.

More complex systems, such as airplanes, have multiple inputs and outputs. The pilot may change the aileron, rudder, and elevator, and the aircraft responds with roll, pitch, and yaw. Because there are several signals on both sides, vectors and matrices are used to write the system in a compact form.

In these multi-variable systems, inputs and outputs are grouped into vectors. Their relationships are described with a transfer matrix. Feedback loops can also be written with matrix equations. This gives a complete way to represent how the system behaves.
