I rami paralleli nella stessa direzione possono essere sostituiti con un unico ramo con un guadagno pari alla somma dei guadagni dei rami originali.
Allo stesso modo, una connessione in cascata di rami unidirezionali può essere sostituita con un singolo ramo con un guadagno pari al prodotto dei guadagni del ramo originale.
I sistemi di retroazione nei grafi di flusso del segnale o SFG seguono specifiche equazioni algebriche che possono essere utilizzate per derivare la funzione di trasferimento ad anello chiuso.
Un diagramma a blocchi di un sistema di controllo può essere convertito in un formato SFG. Ciò comporta l'identificazione delle variabili, l'associazione di ciascuna variabile a un nodo, l'interconnessione dei nodi con i rami e l'etichettatura di ciascun ramo con il guadagno appropriato.

Ogni nodo in un SFG corrisponde ad una variabile e le interazioni tra i nodi sono rappresentate da diramazioni con guadagni associati. Quando più diramazioni conducono ad un nodo, il valore in quest’ultimo è la somma dei segnali da tutte le diramazioni in arrivo. Le diramazioni in uscita trasmettono quindi questo valore, moltiplicato per i rispettivi guadagni, ai nodi successivi.

Le diramazioni parallele che dirigono i segnali nella stessa direzione possono essere consolidate in una singola diramazione. Il guadagno di questa nuova diramazione è la somma dei guadagni delle diramazioni parallele originali. Ad esempio, se due diramazioni con guadagni G_1 e G_2 sono parallele, possono essere sostituite da una singola diramazione con un guadagno G=G_1+G_2.

Le diramazioni a cascata, o diramazioni collegate in serie, possono essere semplificate in modo simile. Il guadagno della diramazione risultante è il prodotto dei guadagni delle diramazioni originali. Per esempio, se due diramazioni con guadagni G_1 e G_2 sono a cascata, possono essere sostituite da una singola diramazione con un guadagno G=G_1×G_2.

Nei sistemi di feedback, vengono utilizzate equazioni algebriche specifiche per derivare la funzione di trasferimento a ciclo chiuso. Signal flow graph (SFG) branch rules show how signals move through a control system. Each node in an SFG stands for a variable. The value at a node is the sum of all signals entering it. That summed value then travels through every branch leaving the node.

Branches connect the nodes and show the relationship between variables. Each branch has a gain, which tells how strongly the signal is passed along. When several branches enter the same node, their signals are added together. When one node sends its value to the next nodes, each outgoing branch carries that value multiplied by its own gain.

Parallel branches point in the same direction and can be combined into one branch. The gain of the new branch is the sum of the original gains, such as G1 + G2. Cascaded branches are connected in series and can also be simplified. In that case, the gain of the new branch is the product of the original gains, such as G1 × G2.

SFG algebra is also used in feedback systems to find the closed-loop transfer function. This requires identifying the feedback loop and applying the correct formula for the system. A block diagram can be converted into an SFG by identifying the variables, drawing the branches between them, and labeling each branch with the right gain. An SFG can also be built directly from algebraic equations by creating nodes for each variable, linking them by the equation relationships, and assigning branch gains from the coefficients.
