Un controller PID unisce le caratteristiche degli attributi PD e PI, compensando le loro carenze individuali.
Nella progettazione di un controller PID, viene prima considerato come una parte PI collegata in cascata con una parte PD. La costante proporzionale della parte PD è impostata su unità, poiché nel controller PID sono necessari solo tre parametri.
Successivamente, è attivo solo il componente PD. Il valore del guadagno derivato viene scelto per ottenere la stabilità desiderata, misurata da un overshoot massimo nel dominio del tempo e dalle misure del margine di fase nel dominio della frequenza.

Un controller PID, combina le caratteristiche dei controller PD e PI, bilanciando i rispettivi vantaggi e affrontando le loro limitazioni. Quando si progetta un controller PID, inizialmente viene trattato come una parte PI, collegata in serie con una parte PD. La costante proporzionale della sezione PD è impostata su unità, poiché il controller PID richiede solo tre parametri.

Innanzitutto, viene attivato solo il componente PD. PID controllers are used to balance system response in control systems. They improve stability and performance by adjusting output as the measured value moves away from the desired value. In a thermostat, for example, the controller changes heating or cooling based on the temperature difference between the actual temperature and the set point. In automotive speed systems, it also helps manage sudden speed changes while keeping speed steady under changing conditions.

PID control combines the ideas of PI and PD controllers. A PI controller, or proportional-integral controller, is often used in voltage regulation because it reduces steady-state error and improves stability. The tradeoff is that it can take longer to reach the target voltage. A PD controller, or proportional-derivative controller, responds quickly to changes and helps improve stability.

When a PID controller is designed, it is first treated as a PI section connected in series with a PD section. The proportional constant of the PD part is set to unity because the full PID controller uses only three parameters. The PD component is activated first. Then the derivative gain is adjusted to reach the desired stability. That stability is checked by looking at maximum overshoot in the time domain and phase margin in the frequency domain.

After that, the integral and proportional gains for the PI section are chosen to meet the overall stability requirements. The integral gain helps remove steady-state error, while the proportional gain shapes the response so the controller meets relative stability criteria. By combining proportional, integral, and derivative action, the controller handles both fast changes and long-term error. This makes PID control useful in thermostats and many industrial systems that need precise, steady operation.
