I trasformatori sigillati hanno spesso un diaframma di scarico della pressione, progettato per rompersi quando la pressione interna supera una soglia specificata.

I trasformatori per esterni, includono un serbatoio di conservazione per l'espansione e la contrazione dell'olio, dovute alle variazioni di temperatura. Questa caratteristica, assicura longevità al trasformatore, impedendo la formazione di umidità e fanghi. Queste classificazioni, garantiscono che i trasformatori funzionino entro limiti di temperatura sicuri. I trasformatori di distribuzione collegano il sistema primario ad alta tensione, al sistema secondario a bassa tensione. Possono essere installati all'esterno, all'interno o sottoterra e sono disponibili in vari tipi:

Trasformatori montati su palo: possono essere monofase o trifase, sono solitamente riempiti di liquido e sono autoprotetti. Spesso utilizzati nelle reti di distribuzione aeree.

Trasformatori a piedistallo: posizionati a livello del suolo, possono essere riempiti di liquido o di tipo secco. Sono comunemente utilizzati nei sistemi di distribuzione sotterranei e possono essere monofase o trifase.

Trasformatori di rete: si tratta di grandi trasformatori trifase riempiti di liquido, solitamente installati in caveau sotterranei. Sono utilizzati nelle aree urbane per gestire elevate densità di carico.

I trasformatori nei sistemi di distribuzione, garantiscono che i livelli di tensione siano opportunamente ridotti e regolati per una distribuzione sicura ed efficiente agli utenti finali.

Distribution transformers and substation transformers step down high transmission voltage for safe delivery to homes, schools, and businesses. In distribution systems, these transformers are usually grouped as distribution substation transformers and other distribution transformers. Their main job is to lower voltage to levels that fit distribution and end-user use.

Distribution substation transformers often use mineral oil for insulation and cooling. Some units keep an inert gas, such as nitrogen, above the oil so moisture and air do not enter. Transformers with load tap changers, or LTCs, can adjust voltage automatically to help keep delivery steady when demand changes.

Sealed transformers may use a pressure-relief diaphragm. This part ruptures if internal pressure rises above a set limit. Outdoor transformers often include a conservator tank, which allows oil to expand and contract as temperature changes. This helps limit moisture and sludge formation and supports longer transformer life.

These transformers are rated by their maximum continuous load capacity, shown as MVA ratings. The rating helps ensure the transformer stays within safe temperature limits. Distribution transformers then connect the primary high-voltage system to the secondary low-voltage system.

Distribution transformers can be installed outdoors, indoors, or underground. Pole-mount transformers are commonly used in overhead distribution networks and can be single-phase or three-phase. They are usually liquid-filled and self-protected. Padmount transformers sit at ground level and may be liquid-filled or dry-type. They are common in underground distribution systems and can also be single-phase or three-phase. Network transformers are large, liquid-filled three-phase units placed in underground vaults. They are often used in cities where load density is high.

Electric Power Flow from Plant to Home

Electric power distribution moves electricity from power plants to homes, businesses, and industry through transmission and distribution networks. Power plants convert energy from coal, gas, nuclear, water, and wind into electrical energy.
