Per i generatori, gli interruttori a due cicli vengono selezionati in base alla corrente di guasto subtransitoria, calcolata utilizzando le reattanze subtransitorie. Per i motori sincroni, si applicano reattanze subtransitorie o transitorie, a seconda della velocità dell'interruttore.
I fusibili, dispositivi di sovracorrente con un collegamento fusibile in un tubo riempito di sabbia, fungono da conduttori durante il normale funzionamento. La corrente di sovraccarico aumenta la temperatura del collegamento, provocandone la fusione e la formazione di un arco.

Un interruttore automatico, è un dispositivo progettato per interrompere le correnti di guasto e talvolta richiudersi automaticamente. Quando viene rilevata una corrente di guasto, l'interruttore separa i contatti elettrici, generando un arco. Questo arco viene estinto tramite metodi quali allungamento, raffreddamento o divisione, a seconda della progettazione dell'interruttore. Gli interruttori sono classificati in base alla tensione a cui operano e al mezzo utilizzato per l'estinzione dell'arco, come aria, olio, gas SF6 o vuoto.

Nei sistemi ad alta tensione, gli interruttori automatici sono in genere dotati di meccanismi di richiusura automatica. Questi interruttori si richiudono entro 15-50 cicli dopo un'interruzione. Se il guasto persiste, si bloccano, rendendo necessario l'intervento manuale di un operatore. Nei sistemi a bassa tensione, sono comuni gli interruttori scatolati a doppio sgancio. Questi interruttori utilizzano sganci magnetici istantanei, per gestire guasti di grandi dimensioni e sganci termici, per gestire guasti di dimensioni inferiori.

Il metodo E/X, semplifica la selezione dell'interruttore calcolando la massima corrente di cortocircuito simmetrica. Questo approccio utilizza le caratteristiche di tensione pre-guasto e reattanza del sistema, ignorando altri fattori. Per i generatori, vengono utilizzati gli interruttori a due cicli per calcolare la corrente di guasto subtransitoria, basandosi sulle reattanze subtransitorie della macchina. Per i motori sincroni, vengono considerate le reattanze subtransitorie o transitorie, in base alla velocità di funzionamento dell'interruttore.

I fusibili servono come dispositivi di protezione da sovracorrente, contenenti un collegamento fusibile all'interno di un tubo riempito di sabbia. In condizioni normali, il collegamento fusibile conduce elettricità. Quando si verifica una corrente di sovraccarico, la temperatura del collegamento aumenta, causandone la fusione e la formazione di un arco. I fusibili sono specificati in base a quattro fattori chiave: corrente nominale, tensione nominale, interruzione nominale e caratteristiche di ritardo. Essi devono essere sostituiti manualmente una volta fusi.

Sia gli interruttori automatici che i fusibili, svolgono un ruolo fondamentale nella protezione dei sistemi elettrici da correnti di guasto e condizioni di sovracorrente. Gli interruttori automatici, con la loro capacità di richiudersi automaticamente e gestire diversi tipi di guasti, sono essenziali nelle applicazioni ad alta e bassa tensione. Circuit breakers and fuses protect electrical systems from fault current and overcurrent. They help stop damage when current rises above safe limits. Both devices are chosen based on the needs of the electrical system.

A circuit breaker interrupts fault current by separating its contacts. This creates an arc, which must be extinguished by elongation, cooling, or splitting, depending on the breaker design. Breakers are grouped by operating voltage and by the arc-extinguishing medium, such as air, oil, SF6 gas, or vacuum.

High-voltage circuit breakers often include automatic reclosing. They can reclose within 15 to 50 cycles after an interruption. If the fault remains, the breaker locks out and an operator must reset it manually. In low-voltage systems, dual-trip molded case breakers are common. These use magnetic instantaneous trips for large faults and thermal trips for smaller faults.

The E/X method is used to simplify breaker selection. It finds the maximum symmetrical short-circuit current from the prefault voltage and the system reactance. It ignores other factors. For generators, two-cycle breakers are used to calculate subtransient fault current from subtransient machine reactances. For synchronous motors, subtransient or transient reactances are used, depending on breaker operating speed.

Fuses are overcurrent devices with a fusible link inside a sand-filled tube. Under normal conditions, the fusible link carries current. During an overload, its temperature rises, the link melts, and an arc forms. Fuses are selected by current rating, voltage rating, interrupting rating, and time-delay characteristics. After they melt, they must be replaced by hand. Circuit breakers and fuses both provide important protection against fault conditions, but they do so in different ways.
