I relè di sovracorrente, collegati alla corrente secondaria di un trasformatore di corrente, sono fondamentali per la protezione dei circuiti.
Ne esistono di due tipi: relè di sovracorrente istantanei e temporizzati.
I relè di sovracorrente istantanei reagiscono non appena la corrente di ingresso supera un valore preimpostato, la corrente di pickup. Questa azione eccita istantaneamente la bobina di scatto dell'interruttore.
Anche i relè di sovracorrente temporizzati rispondono alla loro corrente di ingresso, ma includono un ritardo intenzionale che dipende dall'entità della corrente di ingresso.
Si consideri, ad esempio, una sottostazione elettrica. Se si verifica un guasto, causando un picco di corrente, un relè istantaneo scatterebbe immediatamente.
Al contrario, un relè temporizzato consentirebbe sovratensioni minori senza scattare, ma agirebbe comunque rapidamente per guasti più grandi.
Questi relè hanno due impostazioni: tocco corrente e selezione oraria.
La scelta del relè e le sue impostazioni dipendono dalle sorgenti, dalle linee e dai carichi. Diversi relè funzionano più velocemente con correnti di guasto più elevate.
Un relè elettromeccanico temporizzato di massima corrente funziona utilizzando un disco conduttore in alluminio, che ruota sotto un campo magnetico indotto dalla corrente di ingresso. Maggiore è la corrente di ingresso, più veloce è la chiusura del contatto.

I relè di sovracorrente, essenziali per la protezione del circuito, sono collegati alla corrente secondaria di un trasformatore di corrente. Esistono due tipi principali di relè di sovracorrente: quelli istantanei e quelli a ritardo.

I relè di sovracorrente istantanei si attivano immediatamente quando la corrente d’ingresso supera un valore predeterminato, noto come corrente di spunto, eccitando immediatamente la bobina di sgancio dell'interruttore. Questa risposta rapida è fondamentale per affrontare rapidamente dei guasti gravi.

I relè di sovracorrente a ritardo, d'altro canto, includono un ritardo intenzionale nella loro risposta, che dipende dall'entità della corrente d’ingresso. Per esempio, in una sottostazione elettrica, un relè istantaneo scatterebbe immediatamente al rilevamento di un picco di corrente indotto da un guasto superiore alla corrente di spunto. Al contrario, un relè a ritardo consente il passaggio di picchi minori senza scattare, ma risponde rapidamente a guasti significativi.

Questi relè sono configurati usando due impostazioni principali: la presa di corrente e il quadrante del tempo. La selezione appropriata del tipo di relè e delle sue impostazioni è influenzata dalle caratteristiche specifiche delle sorgenti, delle linee e dei carichi nel sistema. Nello specifico, i relè a ritardo di tempo, sono progettati per funzionare più velocemente a correnti di guasto più elevate, fornendo così una protezione su misura.

Un relè di sovracorrente elettromeccanico a ritardo temporale funziona tramite un disco di alluminio conduttore, che ruota all'interno di un campo magnetico generato dalla corrente d’ingresso. La velocità di rotazione del disco è proporzionale all'entità della corrente d’ingresso, facendo sì che i contatti del relè si chiudano più rapidamente con correnti maggiori. Questo meccanismo garantisce una protezione affidabile e regolabile per diverse condizioni di guasto nei sistemi di alimentazione.

Questi relè sono essenziali per il funzionamento accurato dei dispositivi di protezione, garantendo così il funzionamento sicuro e affidabile dei sistemi di alimentazione. Overcurrent relays protect circuits by sensing excess current through the secondary side of a current transformer. They are an important part of circuit protection and help keep power systems stable when a fault occurs.

Two main relay types are used here: instantaneous and time-delay overcurrent relays. An instantaneous relay trips right away when current rises above the pickup current, which is the preset level that starts the relay. It then energizes the circuit breaker trip coil at once, which is useful for severe faults that need very fast action.

A time-delay overcurrent relay works differently. It adds a planned delay, and that delay depends on how large the input current is. In a power substation, it can let small surges pass without tripping, but it still responds quickly to major fault currents.

These relays are adjusted with two main settings: the current tap and the time dial. The best relay type and settings depend on the sources, lines, and loads in the system. Time-delay relays are also designed to act faster when fault current is higher.

An electromechanical time-delay relay uses a conducting aluminum disc that turns in a magnetic field created by the input current. The disc spins faster as the current increases, so the relay contacts close sooner during larger faults. This adjustable action helps protect equipment and supports reliable operation of power systems.
