Qui, ogni generatore si collega a un sistema composto da linee di trasmissione, trasformatori, carichi e altre macchine rappresentate da un bus infinito dietro la reattanza del sistema.
Si consideri un generatore sincrono collegato a una rete o a un bus infinito con ampiezza, fase e frequenza di tensione costanti. La sua potenza è una funzione sinusoidale dell'angolo di potenza della macchina.
Durante i transitori, le tensioni interne e bus sono considerate costanti per i calcoli della potenza.
Il criterio dell'area uguale viene utilizzato quando si verifica un cambio di passo nella potenza meccanica. Il rotore accelera a causa dell'inerzia, superando il suo punto di stazionarietà finale prima di stabilizzarsi a causa dello smorzamento dovuto alle perdite meccaniche ed elettriche.
Il criterio dell'area uguale si applica a una singola macchina collegata a un bus infinito o a due macchine interconnesse.
Per i sistemi multi-macchina, l'equazione di oscillazione non lineare di ogni macchina viene risolta utilizzando l'integrazione numerica per determinare la stabilità e l'angolo di potenza massimo.

Dove V_bus è la tensione della sbarra, E^’ è la tensione interna del generatore e X_eq è la reattanza. Durante gli eventi transitori, si presume che la tensione interna E e la tensione della sbarra V rimangano costanti, semplificando i calcoli di potenza.

Il criterio di equivalenza delle aree è un metodo grafico utilizzato per valutare la stabilità del sistema in seguito a un improvviso cambiamento di potenza meccanica. Quando si verifica un cambiamento di passo, il rotore della macchina sincrona accelera a causa della sua inerzia, superando la sua posizione finale di stato stazionario prima di stabilizzarsi attraverso gli effetti di smorzamento delle perdite meccaniche ed elettriche. Il criterio afferma che l'area che rappresenta la potenza di accelerazione (potenza meccanica meno potenza elettrica) deve essere uguale all'area che rappresenta la potenza di decelerazione affinché il sistema ritorni a un punto operativo stabile.

Il criterio di equivalenza delle aree è particolarmente utile per analizzare una singola macchina collegata a una sbarra infinita o due macchine interconnesse. Per sistemi multi-macchina più complessi, l'analisi della stabilità transitoria richiede la risoluzione dell'equazione di oscillazione non lineare di ogni macchina utilizzando tecniche di integrazione numerica. Questo approccio tiene conto delle interazioni tra più generatori e determina la stabilità complessiva del sistema e l'angolo di potenza massimo che ogni generatore può sostenere.

The synchronous machine model helps students analyze transient stability in power systems. It represents a synchronous generator under balanced three-phase positive-sequence conditions. The model assumes constant excitation and ignores losses and saturation. These simplifications make it easier to study how a generator behaves during a disturbance.

In this setup, the generator is connected to a network of transmission lines, transformers, loads, and other machines. That larger system is often represented by an infinite bus behind a system reactance. An infinite bus has constant voltage magnitude, phase, and frequency, so it serves as a stable reference for analysis.

For a synchronous generator connected to the grid, output power changes with the machine power angle, δ. The power follows a sinusoidal relationship with the bus voltage, the internal generator voltage E', and the equivalent reactance Xeq. During transient events, the internal voltage E and the bus voltage V are treated as constant, which simplifies the power calculation.

The Equal-Area Criterion is a graphical way to test stability after a sudden change in mechanical power. When a step change occurs, the rotor accelerates because of its inertia. It may overshoot its final steady-state position before damping from mechanical and electrical losses brings it back.

The criterion says the accelerating area, which is the difference between mechanical power and electrical power, must equal the decelerating area for the system to return to a stable operating point. This method is especially useful for a single machine connected to an infinite bus or for two interconnected machines. For more complex multi-machine systems, engineers solve each generator's nonlinear swing equation with numerical integration methods.

These calculations account for how multiple generators interact and help determine overall system stability. They also show the maximum power angle each generator can sustain. Together, the synchronous machine model, the Equal-Area Criterion, and numerical integration provide a practical framework for studying transient stability in power grids.
