Le pareti in muratura composita sono costruite utilizzando due o più pareti realizzate con materiali murari diversi o con gli stessi materiali murari.
I wythes sono separati da un giunto a collare largo circa tre quarti di pollice riempito di malta o da uno spazio più ampio che può essere stuccato negli ascensori man mano che il muro viene costruito.
In alternativa, i singoli torni vengono incollati insieme per formare una parete solida, utilizzando comunemente tiranti o rinforzi metallici rigidi e raramente utilizzando unità di testata in muratura sovrapposte.
I tiranti metallici, essendo meno favorevoli alla penetrazione dell'acqua, sono preferiti rispetto alle testate in muratura poiché le pareti composite impediscono principalmente la penetrazione della pioggia assorbendo l'umidità e poi rilasciandola nuovamente nell'atmosfera attraverso l'evaporazione.
Prendi in considerazione una tradizionale parete in muratura composita con un rivestimento in pietra, che è durevole ed esteticamente accattivante, e un wythe adiacente di mattoni meno costosi. Questi due strati sono legati insieme mediante fascette metalliche.

Un esempio di questo approccio è un muro costruito con unità di muratura in calcestruzzo per entrambi gli strati, legate con rinforzi, giunti riempiti di malta e tiranti metallici.

Composite masonry walls use two or more wythes, or vertical layers, of masonry to form one unified wall. The wythes may use the same material or different masonry materials. They are joined to work together as a single structure.

These wythes can be bonded in several ways. Builders may use mortar-filled collar joints, grouted spaces, or rigid metal ties with reinforcement. Masonry header units can also connect the layers, but this method is rare. Metal ties are often preferred because they help limit water penetration.

Moisture control matters because these walls absorb water and then release it into the air. Composite walls have often used mixed materials to balance appearance, strength, and cost. A common example is a wall with an outer stone facing for durability and looks, and an inner brick wythe for lower cost. Other traditional combinations have included terra cotta and hollow clay tile.
