Le pareti in muratura possono essere isolate termicamente per ridurre al minimo la perdita di calore in inverno e l'aumento di calore in estate.
L'isolamento termico può essere effettuato all'esterno, all'interno e tra i vasi.
Un edificio con pannelli di polistirene espanso fissati alla parete esterna, che vengono poi ricoperti da uno strato di stucco polimerico e rinforzati con rete in fibra di vetro, è isolato esternamente.
Allo stesso modo, l'isolamento termico interno può essere ottenuto fissando barriere riflettenti o isolamento in batt alla superficie della parete interna utilizzando strisce di rivestimento, seguite dall'installazione di un pannello di gesso per creare uno spazio nascosto per ospitare le utenze.
Inoltre, mantenere un sufficiente intercapedine d'aria tra le pareti, inserire lastre di schiuma di plastica all'interno di questo spazio o riempire l'isolamento granulare, come la perlite, nella cavità tra le pareti in mattoni aiuta a isolare termicamente le pareti".
Tuttavia, per le pareti fortemente rinforzate, l'armatura funge da ponte termico e lo spazio limitato per l'isolamento porta a un isolamento termico ridotto.
La scelta dell'isolamento termico dipende dalla funzione dell'edificio, dalle normative edilizie e da un'analisi costi-benefici.

In climi caldi e secchi, la massa termica delle pareti in muratura può essere utile, assorbendo calore durante il giorno e rilasciandolo di notte, stabilizzando così le temperature interne. Tuttavia, nella maggior parte degli altri climi, è necessario un isolamento aggiuntivo per migliorare la resistenza termica.

L'isolamento esterno può essere applicato utilizzando un sistema di isolamento e finitura esterna (EIFS), che prevede l'applicazione di pannelli di schiuma di plastica alla parete e la loro copertura con uno stucco polimerico rinforzato con rete in fibra di vetro. Questo metodo non solo migliora l'isolamento, ma protegge anche la muratura dalle temperature estreme, rendendolo una scelta popolare per il retrofitting di edifici esistenti in cui preservare l'aspetto esterno non è una priorità.

Un altro approccio è quello di isolare le pareti dall’interno, il quale prevede l'inserimento di lastre di schiuma di plastica contro la parete interna durante la costruzione, o il riempimento delle cavità dei blocchi di cemento con rivestimenti in schiuma. Sebbene efficace, questo isolamento interno non impedisce il trasferimento di calore attraverso le sezioni solide della muratura, come le trame dei blocchi o le aree completamente stuccate, limitandone in qualche modo l'efficienza.

È anche possibile isolare la superficie interna delle pareti in muratura. Ciò in genere include l'applicazione diretta dell'isolamento alla parete seguita da strisce di rivestimento in legno o metallo. I materiali di finitura interna, come i pannelli di cartongesso, vengono quindi montati su queste strisce. Questo metodo non solo migliora l'isolamento termico, ma crea anche un comodo vuoto per nascondere i cavi elettrici e gli impianti idraulici, affrontando una sfida comune nelle costruzioni in muratura.

Thermal Insulation in Masonry Walls

Masonry wall insulation can be placed on the outside, inside the wall, or on the interior surface. The best choice depends on the climate, the building design, and whether the wall is being built new or retrofitted. In hot, dry climates, masonry can help smooth indoor temperatures by absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night.

In many other climates, extra insulation is needed to improve thermal resistance. One common exterior method is an Exterior Insulation and Finish System, or EIFS. EIFS uses plastic foam panels fixed to the wall and then covered with a polymeric stucco reinforced with glass fiber mesh. This approach adds insulation and also shields the masonry from temperature extremes. It is often used when an existing building is being updated and the original exterior look does not need to stay the same.

Insulation can also be added within the wall during construction. This may involve placing plastic foam slabs against the inner wythe, or inner layer, of the wall. In concrete block walls, foam liners can fill the hollow cores. This method works well, but heat can still pass through solid parts of the masonry, such as block webs or fully grouted areas, so the insulation is not as effective there.

Another option is to insulate the interior face of the wall. In this method, insulation is attached directly to the masonry and then covered with wood or metal furring strips. Gypsum wallboard is mounted on the strips as the interior finish. This setup improves thermal insulation and also leaves a space for electrical wiring and plumbing, which is a common challenge in masonry construction.
