Consideriamo un grande centro commerciale con una struttura architettonica geometricamente complessa. Il complesso è suddiviso in piccole unità indipendenti, geometricamente compatte, mediante giunti di separazione degli edifici.
Questi giunti sono classificati come giunti a variazione di volume, giunti di assestamento e giunti di separazione sismica.
I giunti di variazione di volume sono posizionati in corrispondenza delle discontinuità orizzontali o verticali dell'edificio per alleviare gli effetti di dilatazione e contrazione delle unità immobiliari.
Generalmente, queste articolazioni si trovano a intervalli da 150 a 200 piedi.
La torre e l'adiacente ala bassa dell'edificio sono separate mediante giunti di assestamento progettati per evitare disagi dovuti ai diversi tassi di assestamento previsti per i diversi tipi di fondazione forniti.
I giunti di separazione sismica sono previsti tra i segmenti dell'edificio per consentire alle singole unità di muoversi in modo indipendente durante un terremoto, evitando danni l'una all'altra.

I giunti di variazione di volume affrontano gli effetti di espansione e contrazione dovuti a variazioni di temperatura e umidità. Sono posizionati strategicamente in punti di discontinuità nella massa di un edificio dove è più probabile che si formino crepe e sono distanziati di circa 45.72-60.96 metri l'uno dall'altro in strutture allungate, con spaziatura su misura per le proprietà del materiale e l'entità delle variazioni dimensionali previste.

I giunti di assestamento vengono utilizzati per prevenire il disagio strutturale che può verificarsi a causa di tassi di assestamento differenziali in diverse parti di un edificio. Questa situazione può verificarsi in strutture con diversi tipi di fondamenta o costruite su diverse condizioni del terreno.

I giunti di separazione sismica sono progettati specificamente per edifici in aree soggette a terremoti. Questi giunti dividono l'edificio in segmenti più piccoli per garantire che ogni parte possa muoversi indipendentemente durante gli eventi sismici, riducendo al minimo il rischio di danni.

Types of Building Separation Joints

Building separation joints help large or complex buildings move in a controlled way. They split a structure into smaller, separate units. This reduces stress when the building shifts under different forces.

The joints are grouped into three main types: volume-change joints, settlement joints, and seismic separation joints. Volume-change joints handle expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes and moisture changes. They are placed where the building mass has discontinuities, because cracking is more likely there. In long buildings, they are often spaced about 150 to 200 feet apart. The exact spacing depends on the material and on how much size change is expected.

Settlement joints prevent structural distress caused by different parts of a building settling at different rates. This can happen when one section uses a different foundation type or when parts of the building sit on different soil conditions. Seismic separation joints are used in earthquake-prone areas. They divide a building into smaller segments so each part can move on its own during shaking.

In practice, these joints are created by building independent structures on each side of the joint. In some cases, the sides have separate foundations and separate structural elements. This design helps the building respond to movement without major damage.
