Le pavimentazioni in muratura sono utilizzate nei passaggi pedonali, negli ingressi degli edifici, nei cortili e talvolta nei vialetti.
È costruito utilizzando mattoni, pietre e blocchi in muratura di calcestruzzo di diverse forme e colori, con adeguata robustezza e resistenza all'abrasione e agli agenti atmosferici.
Queste unità di stesa sono posate su una base di decantazione distribuita su uno strato di base.
Il letto di decantazione è costituito da uno strato di sabbia, ghiaia di piselli o pietrisco finemente denso che aiuta a livellare le unità di pavimentazione.
Lo strato di base rigido delle pavimentazioni soggette a forti carichi veicolari può essere realizzato in cemento armato o non armato.
Mentre i percorsi pedonali utilizzano uno strato di base semiflessibile in asfalto o calcestruzzo bituminoso o uno strato di base flessibile in ghiaia o sabbia.
Per una pavimentazione permeabile, l'acqua piovana che cade sulla pavimentazione può attraversarla e infiltrarsi nel terreno sottostante, riducendo così al minimo il deflusso negli scarichi delle acque piovane.
Ciò è garantito distanziando le unità con sabbia o terreno piantumato tra di loro o utilizzando pavimentazioni porose, come cemento permeabile o blocchi di pavimentazione aperti.

Questa caratteristica si ottiene utilizzando materiali porosi come blocchi di pavimentazione permeabili o progettando spazi tra unità di pavimentazione convenzionali riempiti con sabbia o terreno vegetato. Masonry paving uses bricks, stones, and concrete masonry units to create durable walking and driving surfaces. These materials are selected for their shape, color, strength, and resistance to abrasion and weathering. Masonry units can be used in different paving setups depending on the site and the load they must carry.

Some paving systems are installed dry on a thin sand layer over a gravel base. Others are set in mortar or asphalt on a concrete slab. For areas with heavy vehicular loads, a rigid base made of reinforced or unreinforced concrete is often recommended. Pedestrian paths usually use a semi-flexible base of asphalt or bituminous concrete, or a flexible base of gravel or sand.

A key part of the system is the setting bed. This is the layer between the paving units and the base layer. It is usually 1 to 2 inches thick and made of pea gravel or finely crushed stone. Its main job is to level irregularities in the base or in the paving units themselves.

Modern masonry paving can also be designed as permeable paving. In this system, rainwater can pass through the pavement and soak into the soil below. Builders may use porous materials such as pervious paving blocks, or they may leave spaces between standard paving units and fill them with sand or vegetated soil. These systems can help reduce stress on municipal drainage systems and support groundwater replenishment.
