I tronchi vengono solitamente tagliati in tavole e lastre nei mulini e stagionati prima dell'uso.

Il legno, ricavato dagli alberi, è un materiale da costruzione versatile e ampiamente utilizzato. Gli alberi presentano un tronco circondato da uno strato protettivo di corteccia morta. Sotto questo strato esterno si trova la corteccia viva, seguita dal cambio e poi dall'alburno, il quale si trasforma in durame man mano che matura. Al centro del tronco si trova il midollo. L'età di un albero può essere individuata esaminando i suoi anelli di crescita, che sono bande concentriche visibili nella sezione trasversale del tronco.

L'integrità strutturale del legno è influenzata dalla sua venatura: cellule tubolari allungate allineate con la lunghezza del tronco, che gli consentono di sopportare carichi maggiori lungo la direzione della venatura rispetto a quelli perpendicolari alle venature.

Il legno è disponibile sotto forma di grandi tronchi cilindrici e trasportato alle segherie dove viene trasformato in assi e lastre. Prima di essere utilizzato in edilizia, il legno viene solitamente stagionato per ridurre il contenuto di umidità e prolungarne la durata.

Il legno è parte integrante della costruzione di vari elementi strutturali e infissi, tra cui porte, finestre, pavimenti, tetti, colonne, travi e ringhiere. È anche utilizzato per realizzare mobili e impalcature. Oltre al legno massello, funge da materiale di base per la produzione di compensato, truciolato e pannelli duri.

Wood is a construction material made from trees. A tree trunk has several layers. The outside is a protective layer of dead bark. Under that is living bark, then the cambium, then sapwood. As sapwood matures, it becomes heartwood. The pith sits at the center of the trunk.

The age of a tree can be read from its growth rings. These rings are concentric bands seen in a trunk cross-section. Wood strength also depends on grain. Grain refers to elongated, tubular cells that run along the length of the trunk. Wood can carry greater loads along the grain than across it.

Wood is usually cut as large cylindrical logs and sent to mills. There, it is turned into boards and slabs. Before construction use, wood is often seasoned. Seasoning lowers moisture content and helps improve durability.

In building, wood is used as lumber or timber. It is important for doors, windows, flooring, roofing, columns, beams, and stair railings. It is also used to make furniture and scaffolding. Wood is also a base material for plywood, particleboard, and hardboard.
